Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Would you let your children, ages 7 and 8, travel with extended family to Switzerland for two or three weeks?

My sisters and our families are all supposed to be going to visit my brother and his family in Switzerland in October. I think I might be expecting (I am several days late and completely nauseous, but the pregnancy test is negative ~ not unusual for me), which means I wouldn't be able to go. I am considering sending my two oldest with one of my sisters, but am not sure if I am crazy.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I let Libby and Trip go to England for a week when they were 6 and 4 with my f-i-l and b-i-l. They had a blast....

i guess it depends on what they are like as parents. if they are responsible, what an opportunity! i don't have any of those types of relatives, so for me, i'd try to find some way to go along myself.

what a neat problem to have!

Oh, man! It would be tough, but I would let them. Think of the opportunities! Plus, the less you have to deal with early in your pregnancy , the better, I would think. A mini vacation for you, as well.

We took our youngest three on a trip in the fall to Switzerland, Germany & France and they had a blast. Have your children been away from you before for extended times? If the children are ok with going and the family watching them are responsible, I see no reason not to send them. If you don't have high risk complications, I would consider joining them - I was pregnant on our trip and it was still enjoyable. Have you been warned about the prices in Switzerland? Everything is outrageously expensive!

We let our 6 yr old son go to Peru with my husband's uncle and stayed with my parent's in law for 2 weeks. He had a blast and can't wait to go back again but the beginning was difficult and lonely at first b/c he didn't know the language. He got used to it pretty quickly and made friends with the neighbors, too. It was quite a surprise to see pictures of him happily grilling a rabbit for dinner!

Thank you for the reassuarance. My siblings are wonderful. My girls spent a weekend with their grandparents and they missed us terribly. I am thinking that being surrounded by cousins might make a difference.

We went to France and Switzerland when I was 5 months pregnant with my second child. It was wonderful and probably really good for me, as I walked almost everywhere. If I am pregnant, I will be about 6 1/2 months this time and my husband said he wouldn't want me to go (he is not going regardless, as he can't get the time off work).

Christine --

I would send them in a heartbeat -- especially as it sounds like your family is pretty close. They would definitely remember it for the rest of the their lives! Now, YOU might be a bit jealous when they get back and talk about all the things they did ....

What an oppty for them!

It depends on your kids, really. Mine would not want to go one bit. They don't even want to spend a weekend at Grandma and Grandpa's without mom and/or dad, and my parent's house is one of their favorite places on earth. I also think I would have a really hard time with the separation at that age.

If your kids are fairly independent and very close to your sister(s), and really want to go, then it probably will be fine.

Nope. Didn't even need to hesitate on that one.

Probably wouldn't at that age - but it would depend on the individual child and if they would be okay with that kind of separation. I know as a child that age I would not have been able to do it myself so sometimes that is what I gauge it by (was miserable if I was away form my parents for a weekend). Then again if my children lived near these relatives and they were a big part of their daily lives already I might feel okay with it - the familiarity and comfort level of the children would be the guide. Since we don't live close to family my kids have never had that kind of really close relationship with aunts/uncles/cousins.

My husband and a couple of my sisters worry quite a bit. They tend to hold me in check. I guess this is something about which I am going to have to pray.

Thank you for all of the advice, both for and against. It gives me some food for thought.
