Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Bethlehem Books is having a sale--35% off of complete series, 25% off of individual series books.

So, my oldest has gone from emerging reader to reading 3 Little House books in the past 5 days!

He is 7 1/2, and I've not read any of the Bethlehem books series to know first hand how difficult they are to read or what the stories are like. I'm pretty sure that he would LOVE them given the various people I know who I've heard recommend them.

But I want to know. What are your favorites? Which ones would you specifically recommend to a second grade boy (which, I'm not even sure what level Little House is considered for reading).

Isn't that just great when it just starts to *click* and they begin devouring good books!!!

For the record, there isn't ANYTHING that Bethlehem publishes that I don't like, but....

For a 1st grade boy that is now devouring Little House books:

The Mitchell Series - this one is going to be a close call. It's at a solid 4th grade reading level, but if he's reading Little House, I think he'd really love the Mitchell family. Heart warming, mischievous, exciting, full of fun!

The Fairchild Family Series - this one is a winner here!! And the reading ability level is a really good fit for him! Darling series that is not unlike the Little House books in its ability to endear you to the characters. The books follow a family that grows up in the hills of Kentucky around the turn of the 20th century.

Secret Panel Books - these are so close to his reading ability, but they list them at a 5th grade level. I can't believe I don't have the Alvin books yet so I can't review them for you!! I might have to take advantage of this sale myself!

If any of these weren't quite at his reading level, they make FANTASTIC read alouds! Those would be the three series I might seriously look at with the sale. Of the three, the top two are classic, can't-lose, winners here!!!!

That's where I'd start anyway!

And, Lindsay....I think it's *only* on those four series for the 35% discount, not ALL of their series.

But the 25% discount would be for ANY of the series books. Is that how the rest of you are reading it? It's a bit confusing.

Hmmmm...I'm re-reading it closer. Initially, I thought the 25% discount applied to other series, but reading closer I think you're right, Suzanne - 35% discount if you buy the entire series all at once....and 25% discount if you buy a book from the series. And you're right...it seems like it's only the following four series on sale:
Quote:
Hilda Van Stockum's Bantry Bay Series.
Elizabeth Coatsworth's Sally Series.
Loula Grace Erdman's The Texas Panhandle Series.
Leonard Wibberly's Treegate Series.

Of those four, the Bantry Bay series is the closest to his reading level, but my guess is that it might be just out of reach for his independent reading ability. It's a VERY good series though, and we do have it and love it. I just think it might be something that if you got it to take advantage of the sale, you might have to keep on the shelf for just a bit til he's ready....or read it aloud.

The Sally series is REALLY good, but doesn't appeal as much to my boys. Great story though! Texas Panhandle is a true read-over-and-over again favorite here (!!!!)....but again...only by my daughter because the story follows a group of three sisters. Treegate series is fantastic, and would work for girls/boys (both daughter and son enjoy this series) but definitely for an older reader.

The Railway Children series by Edith Nesbit is intended for younger age level than Little House books (by my definition anyway) but they are terrific books and captures the child's imagination. I think your son would enjoy them.

Just wanted to add: Homeschool Buyers Co-op is offering Bethlehem Books at special discounts. Purchase 15 or more books for 50% off. I just made a purchase that encompassed much of our science, history and pleasure reading for the coming months and saved a lot with this discount.
