Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

With the new movie Red Tails set to open in theaters next week, I have been seeing renewed coverage of this topic. My good friend(and sometimes member here), Gwen (Momwise), has always encouraged knowledge of this topic. She diligently reminds us locally when an aging Tuskegee airmen is doing a visit somewhere locally. I have failed to take advantage of the opportunities and regret that very much. As with all WWII veterans we are losing them at a rapid rate. So anyway, with the movie coming out there was a radio radio interview this week with a local airman. It got me realizing I need to focus on this topic right now. Am checking into their local speakers bureau to see if our support group could coordinate something.

Here are some posts Gwen has made in the past.

No aviation unit is complete without the Tuskegee Airman; they were simply one of the best escort units in the war and were segregated and degraded throughout WWII by the other troops. They flew the P-51...the "Red-tail."

There is a Cornerstones of Freedom book, and a picture book called Wind Flyers. There are several other non-fiction resources at the library as well as some documentaries and a movie

Wind Flyers is a great picture book . It is not very detailed but it is a beautiful introduction. Vibrant illustrations are punctuated by a text that makes you feel like you are flying along with them. Very fun story of a young boy who jumps off chicken coops and barn lofts to "fly," eventually becoming a Tuskegee Airman.

For instance, Charles Anderson was born on this day in 1907. Anderson pioneered the Tuskegee training program for WWII pilots.

We have taken advantage of many opportunities to meet and talk with local Tuskegee airmen, whose numbers are dwindling rapidly, and were able to get some photos as well.

A Tuskegee Airman website I was visiting said that Flying for Freedom: Untold Stories of the Tuskegee Airmen is the best documentary to date on the topic.

There is also another movie depiction - 1995 TV movie with Laurence Fishburne - Tuskegee Airmen

Mary,
As always, you are so timely! This is an interest of ours, too, and we're hoping to see the movie when it comes out.

I'm excited to read about that documentary, and would welcome any other suggestions of good books on the Tuskegee Airmen.

So true. We are indebted to their great courage and service to our country!

Wow, Mary that is impressive; I can't even remember any of those quotes!! Thank you so much for bringing this up!

It is so fantastic to be posting here, even if it will be short.

I have been working for the last 4 years and this year my very part-time hours have doubled, so my remaining time must be very focused . I wish I could "hang out" here with you more often

Yes, we are all planning to see the movie on opening day. One of the movies had some inaccuracies and I think it was the Laurence Fishburn one MaryM mentioned above. You can probably find out more what those were if you google it.

Perhaps we will work on some of this next week and do a lapbook or folder. If we do I'll post some photos. Anyone else planning anything?

Oh and by the way.....GO BRONCOS!!

Me, too! It looks like a great movie. The trailer was very intense. I'm sure it will be a very emotional movie.

I am going to have my older boys preview it for me, so I can be prepared going to see it.
