What I really mean to ask is:
Did the Pope/Vatican celebrate Epiphany today (the 6th)?
and
Do most other countries celebrate Epiphany today (the 6th)?
Are we, the U.S., the only country to transfer Epiphany to Sunday? And, does the whole country transfer?
I really don't care either way and am not asking to start any kind of discussion at all. It's complicated as to why I'm asking, though. I am really just looking for facts. I could google, but I bet you gals are faster. :)

The pope did Epiphany today. I am not sure about other countries, but I went to daily mass today and it was definitely not the Epiphany.

I was so confused I called our parish secretary and asked when we were celebrating it so I would know when to make my King's Cake.
Yes, I am crazy. It's okay.
Oh, and we're celebrating it on Sunday. So I got to put that off another few days.

I'm pretty sure that all the US has it transfered to the Sunday.
Our church will definately celebrate it on Sunday.
We're having our party at home tomorrow as being the easiest for us/our company.

Unless you follow the Old Calendar and the Extraordinary Form. Mass on January 6 (today) celebrates the Epiphany and this Sunday's Mass (1/8) celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family.

Traditionally or culturally, for us, Rosca de Reyes is served on January 6th. We had some friends over and shared with hot chocolate this evening.

Yes, all of the US has transferred the feast.
Quote:
Complementary Norm: In accord with canon 1246, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops decrees that the holy days of obligation to be observed in the United States are the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God; the Solemnity of the Ascension; the Solemnity of the Assumption; the Solemnity of All Saints; the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception; the Solemnity of Christmas. The Solemnity of the Epiphany shall be transferred to the first Sunday following January 1; the Solemnity of Corpus Christi shall be observed on the second Sunday following Pentecost. |
|

It is my understanding that many countries have transferred the feast as well. England and Wales for sure, but bishops there are considering changing it back to Jan. 6. I found a site that states Greece, Ireland, Italy, and Poland continue to observe Epiphany on January 6, as do some dioceses in Germany. But it must be more than that as I think Spain does as well - and most Spanish speaking countries.
Our family will recognize it liturgically on Sunday but we did celebrate today. Some seminarian friends of ours had a house blessing party and we went to that. Then blessed our door with the blessed chalk the sent home with us.

Germany celebrates Epiphany on the 6th of January. In fact, the Holy Relics of the Magi are enshrined in Cologne and it is a Holy/holiday in that city although the rest of the state, North Rhine Westphalia, does go to work and does continue business as usual! We live in this state NRW, and went to 8am Mass. Usually there is an early morning and an evening Mass offered on those HDoO that are not state backed.
In Bavaria it is still a State backed Holiday if I remember correctly.
I really wish the whole Church would be united with one calender. I can only see advantages of having 1 united calender.

Celebrated the feast of Saint Andre Bessette. It is our son's patron saint and celebrated with a glazed lemon cake. Looking forward to celebrating the Epiphany on Sunday!

Our house blessing party is tomorrow at my sister's house. We'll have our own private home ceremony here later with the blessed chalk.
Dh's birthday is the 6th, and he does like to have it as his day, so we're not complaining much about the Sunday.

We celebrate in our home - special meal, re-arrange nativity set which stays out when the rest of the decs go away either 12th night or epiphany/6th January, do house blessing and a 3 kings procession - all on 6th January.
Then go to mass to celebrate at church on Sunday. But we don't do anything special for epiphany on that day.

We just celebrate it twice, basically. Jan. 6 is our oldest daughter's birthday, and it's always been special that her birthday was the Feast of the Epiphany, so we move our Kings and sort of have a general feast for both birthday/Epiphany. On Sunday there's a party with King Cake at church, and we'll all get little house-blessing kits to take home, with blessed chalk and holy water, so we'll do our house-blessing quietly on Sunday night.
Did go to daily Mass for St. Andre Bessette at the same time, though (and First Friday). The whole thing feels a little schizophrenic to me, but not in a bad way, necessarily. I don't mind feasting twice or having Christmas last a little longer. We won't take down the tree and decorations until Monday (when we start school again, too), and I leave out my Nativity sets until Candlemas.
It would be nice, I agree, to be all on one calendar worldwide, but in the meantime, as we attend both EF and OF Masses regularly, I guess we feel free to play a little loose with both calendars, ie living by both as much as we can. All the riches!

We celebrate with one final gift on Jan. 6, and we then keep up most of the Christmas decorations, especially the Nativity set, until the Sunday celebration.
My dd's birthday is January 9, so we usually end up (as we did last night) celebrating her birthday on the weekend closest to Epiphany. I agree, having a birthday near a feast day makes things very special indeed! (My son's birthday is 2 February, which is Candlemas as well as a certain rodent-related "holiday"...)

It's also my son's birthday, who is our oldest. As a German I still consider Jan. 6th the correct day, although my children were in a performance of the Joy Rosary Musical today to honor the American date of celebrating it.

Australia also moved the Epiphany to Sunday (Baptism of Our Lord to Monday)

We celebrated Epiphany on January 6th. Since my dc were occupied with other activities, my dh and I went out for a curry. I started to take down decorations over the weekend. But I leave my nativity and cradle up until February 2nd.

Thank you so much. I knew in the EF it would be celebrated on the 6th and in the OF on the 8th. I didn't want to explain why I asked because it involves a priest who said something very silly (and very offensive to me) during a homily (!) regarding celebrating Epiphany. Complicated. I'm thinking that he didn't realize the Pope celebrated it on the 6th. :)
Thanks again!
