I've tried to follow ABC's "Made in America" series. At Christmas, they said that China "loves" Christmas, because they make so much money from our spending on gifts. The ABC team encouraged people to buy USA, and said that if we all spent $60 on Made in USA goods, that it would generate ?200,000? jobs, or something like that. I did try buying USA made, with some very modest success.
What I was very upset with was picking up boxes of Christmas cards and finding the "Made in China" printed on them. I even went so far as to write to two Christmas card producers (American Greeting Cards and Hallmark.) Basically, I told them that I was discouraged to see where they have their products produced and why- that it is taking jobs away from Americans, AND that they are giving the job of printing Christmas cards to a country that persecutes Christians. I got one response from American Greeting. It was a so-so response. I got nothing, to date, from Hallmark.
I am going to keep on writing, and encouraging others to do the same. Maybe if enough US folks start vocalizing their concerns, these companies will listen. I hope.

Oh, wow, that is unbelievable. I didn't even think to check my Christmas cards!

Stacy, I agree. We try to buy mostly American, but I'm sure we could do more. And we need to tell manufacturers what we want. Excellent project for the kids this year. Thanks for the idea!

It's tough, isn't it? It seems no matter what I pick up, the label, tag, box, says Made in China.
With all the things that are worthy of being banned, it seems that there is almost nothing that is "safe" anymore, and I don't know what to buy.  There are some stores I avoid and companies I try not to patronize, but I find it very frustrating. 
So, I decided to start looking for Made in USA, and am trying to take small steps in that area. At Christmas, I needed a new ironing board. The only made in USA one was $20 more than all the other foreign made ones, but, it was bigger and more heavy-duty, so I bought it. Dh is thrilled with this mega-board! 
And I have decided to try to send a note whenever possible to manufacturers and stores, letting them know I am looking at the labels and want to see more made in USA products, and that I am willing to spend the money once I find them.
Now I am on a mission to find companies that make stationary and greeting cards in USA (I'm one of those old folks that still loves sending and receiving snail mail, but that's another topic!)
