OK, so now I'm on Pinterest...broke down and got a fb account so my older kids could keep me up to date with their lives.
Now, I've figured out how to pin from 4Real boards onto my own board, but how do I pin onto the 4Real boards? Or is that only moderators who do that?
So many options, it's overwhelming! But cool, too

Yes, only moderators are set up to pin to the official 4 Real board.
It is cool, isn't it? Very visual...

Very cool! There are so many creative and wonderful ideas out there...makes me amazed at how wonderfully God has created us!
I love all the links you and the other moderators have chosen for the board! Thanks!

So I hate to be a downer but have you seen the recent controversy about Pinterest?
Basically it comes down to copyright infringement.
As things currently stand with Pinterest it would violate my conscience to stay there. Why? Because their Terms of Use clearly state that you can ONLY pin images which are EITHER your own OR you have permission to use from the copyright owner.
Quote:
“You acknowledge and agree that you are solely responsible for all Member Content that you make available through the Site, Application and Services. Accordingly, you represent and warrant that: (i) you either are the sole and exclusive owner of all Member Content that you make available through the Site, Application and Services or you have all rights, licenses, consents and releases that are necessary to grant to Cold Brew Labs the rights in such Member Content, as contemplated under these Terms; and (ii) neither the Member Content nor your posting, uploading, publication, submission or transmittal of the Member Content or Cold Brew Labs’ use of the Member Content (or any portion thereof) on, through or by means of the Site, Application and the Services will infringe, misappropriate or violate a third party’s patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, moral rights or other proprietary or intellectual property rights, or rights of publicity or privacy, or result in the violation of any applicable law or regulation.” |

Well I certainly did NOT own the rights to most of the content I had pinned and repinned there, nor did I have permission from the owner, nor did I have the necessary permissions and release that give those rights to Pinterest (another tricky part of that terms of use agreement). I was just doing what everyone else was doing and happily pinning away all the while violating the terms of use which I will fully admit to agreeing to without actually reading first.
I get that they have to cover themselves but by doing so they are laying the burden of copyright infringement on you the user (and you also agree that if someone sues you you have to pay your court costs AND theirs!) and if I cannot pin without warranting that I own the content or have rights to it, etc. etc., I cannot be there without violating their terms of use and more importantly, my conscience.

BTW I should add, if you can guarantee that the content you pin is yours, is copyright free or allows for sharing (creative commons etc.) then you are fine. This also means you have to investigate any content you re-pin from someone else.
Personally I don't have time for that and Pinterest can be a big enough time suck as it is.

That's so odd. It seems the whole point of "pinning" is to "copy" other people's ideas to share and hopefully re-use. I've always likened it to tearing a page from a magazine or newspaper to use the idea later but yet Pinterest allows the same concept...making my home (supposedly) clutter free of "to do" paper piles.
I do understand them covering themselves legally but by their exact terms of use, it defeats the whole purpose of their site, don't you think?
Why would someone post on a blog or such their own idea and then pin it to their own board?

Yes it's very contradictory.

I think for the same reason they might post it on Facebook, so that it reaches a wider audience. But in general Pinterest frowns on self promotion anyway although they do say it's OK to pin something you're proud of so again it's a bit contradictory.
I don't think those who run Pinterest have ill intent but it seems a lot of the nitty gritty of all this really hasn't been well thought out. It's a complicated issue.
