Does anyone have any experience with or information about donating hair to be made into a wig for someone you know? all the information I am finding online is for anonymous donations or children (like Locks of Love). I'd really like to do this for my sister but wondering if it's even possible.
I'm also pondering making a hat with the hair sewn in; anybody know anything about that?
And I realize this isn't the most festive of holiday topics ...
Thank you!

Viviane, I don't know about wigs but what a loving gift that would be. Talking with a lady we know here.. you might also get her soft hats that will feel soft on her head when she doesn't feel like she needs to look good but wants her head covered.

I found one!! Caring and Comfort.
I switched from "donating" to searching on "having a wig made from your hair" and it was one of the top hits.

We used Hats With Hairwhen my daughter made one for her sister (we made the "underhair" version. It's not a full wig, you wear it with a scarf or hat, but it's half the price. Good if the other is out of your price range. Wigs are expensive!

thanks so much! I had come across Hats with Hair after I took a tip from Jodie and expanded my Google search (I don't know why I always use just 1 or 2 words). the Underhair is certainly more in our price range, so it's wonderful to know someone who has experience with this company! and what a great idea about the soft hats; I'll be looking for them. hard to find in Hawaii, but I'll be looking.
blessings on you for helping me out!

If you are looking for hand knit hats, there are a lot of knitters on this board that would be happy to help. Well, I guess I can only speak for myself, but I am positive others would help, too.

Viviane you are so sweet!
I have been doing some research. If anyone is interested there is tons of information on Ravelry, there are groups dedicated solely to knitting hats for cancer patients. Some of the information that I gleamed was that cotton is the best choice for yarn, because it is washable, breathable and soft. There was also many good patterns designed specifically for this purpose that are a bit longer to keep the neck warm and would be comfortable to wear.
I am ready to start when needed all I need is a color recommendation.....until then, your sister, her family and you are in my prayers!
