What are you planning on buying/making your husband for Christmas?
My dh likes to be surprised but to be honest, after thinking up ideas for 9 children, I'm all 'thought out' by the time I get to his present. 
I mean I think of tools, but know way would I spend $500+ without clearing it, so what else? I always get a book, which he likes, but it would be nice to surprise him.
Love to hear your plans, and you never know you may inspire an idea

I wish I knew. I am having a terrible time finding something to get my DH. I'm done with shopping for the kids, and I have gotten my DH a few stocking stuffers (a book, some slippers, some decks of cards) and I got him a leather guitar strap. Otherwise I am just STUCK.
My DH is a techie, so for him, tools would not be a welcome gift .

My dh is getting a St. Kateri Chaplet and a Miraculous Medal Necklace from me. I know that these are two things he would never get himself, but I think it will really like.

I have a hard time with this too. He did give me a few ideas, but I think I am going to get him a gift certificate to get a massage. He has had some back and shoulder aches and pains for awhile now. I have given him this in the past and he has enjoyed it.

I've discovered that my children know just what he needs, so now I go through a list and they give me ideas.
Clothes? (this year they think he needs sweatshirts because he only has one and it really embarasses them)
What does he use that's broken or looks bad? (They suggested a new tea kettle which he uses daily for tea (he's Chinese) and that I daily polish )
Sports? He told one of them that he wanted to go to a major university basketball games this winter with my brother-in-law. Bingo. He's getting a basketball card, made by that dc, with a date and photocopied tickets for a game selected by BIL.
Kids just know these things.

I bought new king sized down pillows for our bed when they were on sale back in September and have shown AMAZING restraint in leaving them packaged in the closet until Christmas. Its one of those things we've talked about needing for YEARS, and I finally decided it would be a nice splurge for Christmas.
Dh also mentioned that for his birthday, he might like little things to spruce up some of the tools he has, like a new saw blade. Would your boys have a good idea for some of those types of things that might be cheaper than a brand new tool? Perhaps they know which bits are broken and need replacing or maybe a hand tool you could have professionally resharpened and then rewrap it for the holiday?

I did pillows for the whole family last year and it was a BIG hit, especially DH!

My hubby is hinting that he wants coins. He's been looking at coin collecting catalogs and watching the coin channel. He really wants a larger safe, but the one he has been eyeing is more like a small mortgage payment   . That's not happening anytime soon.
Last year, there was a thread here about giving an air compressor as a gift. My hubby probably has every Craftsman and Snapon tool in one of his professional toolboxes that are as tall as me. I wouldn't have thought about the air compressor, but he absolutely LOVES that gift. (He got that for his December birthday)
I'm leaning toward something fun. I thought he really didn't care what he gets, but last year's Christmas gifts were probably the biggest hit in the 25 years we've been together.

Hmmmmm.....he might wake up to rollerskates . He went skating for the first time last month. Our kids said they've NEVER seen their daddy that happy & laughing so much.
Thanks for starting this thread! You've reminded me to include one or two fun gifts for him next to the clothes and cologne.

I always buy a page-a-day calendar for my dh that features one of his interests. Last year I bought Smithsonian planes. This year I found a nice one with really gorgeous bird pictures put out by the Audubon Society. This is a consumable item  . The pages can be recycled after using them for scratch paper.
I always buy one new t-shirt for him throughout the year from a place we have visited as a family. This year's is from the Wright Brother's Memorial in Kitty Hawk. He then tosses a an older, grungy t-shirt that has done its time.
I also like to buy him some specialty beer. Usually the World Market has the Beers of the World or something similar. He likes those. Along with that I will buy him a special treat- nuts or fancy pretzels, etc.
Sometimes I will ask what he needs for the garage, etc, and sometimes we'll buy a joint gift for ourselves (one year we did a nice package from Omaha Steaks  ).
It is possible that these predictable gifts can get boring. This year I found a used copy of "Deep Thoughts" by Jack Handy at a thrift store (he is a huge fan of the old Saturday Night Live). I know this will make him smile- it's full of such nonsense. And hey- it cost ten cents!

Thank you for mentioning the old thread, I couldn't believe we had never discussed this topic before. Off to read that one now too. btw my dh does have an air compressor.
What I would like to buy him is a drop saw. But then I know he'd love to be surprised. Gifts is so not my love language, I like giving them but not good at thinking beyond the obvious.

Lindsay, I am so excited about the beer deer  . Thanks!
My dh is getting a very nice bottle of gin. Very nice. He tasted this particular gin while visiting with a priest (who collects top of the line gins...of all things ) and some guy friends. It is rare that my dh takes notice of something special. So while gin is common, this one isn't to him. I may get martini glasses too.
So consider finding something that your dh likes and upgrade...go top of the line? A high end bottle of gin is way cheaper than a sports car .

I got dh Uno the travel one that has the plastic cards (safer with baby drool and kid spills and such) because he mentioned uno as a game the kids might like but I didn't have a particular child to give the game to.
I got him a bottle of cologne, my favorite among the ones he mentioned , because he mentioned needing some more.
a movie.. he knows I have it but may well have forgotten, but the kids don't know and they like seeing us have gifts too.
but I don't have much money or many other ideas.. he just got some needed pants but because they were needed they couldn't wait to go under the tree.
I make sure to make his favorite sweets for the holidays. And my rocky road is apparently a rival to See's Candy brand so I've cooked myself out of that gift
he's really a minimalist in so many ways.. he wants one pocket knife and is so particular that I couldn't guess and he just got one (someone lost and replaced his). And he wouldn't use another.. *I* carry the one pocket knife I tried to get him once upon a time.

I've bought dh a new missal (yay!) and a couple of books I know he will enjoy. He may buy his own present in Japan...he likes Japanese things...I'll be scrambling if he does not find what he wants there!
I LOVE the Guinness idea...I might have to steal that.
He wants boot socks, too, from the Army uniform shop. We will just have to hope that they actually get some in soon!

I just ordered a couple of gifts for dh the other night. I got him a Bunn coffee maker (he has been fighting with our current coffee maker every morning for a couple of years) and Frank Sinatra's the Capitol Years. He will also get a stocking full of candy and things like lip balm and hand lotion. I am sure my oldest has made something for him. She is such a great little gift maker!

The older the boys have gotten (read "the more college and high school expenses we have,") it seems as though we don't buy much for each other. There aren't a whole lot of wants, and only a few needs, so I find it harder each year!
One thing my dh likes, aside from Clint Eastwood (he got the movie collection years ago,) old war movies (ditto on collection,) and books (and we have a gazillion,) is moose. While traveling through the UP about 10 years ago, we went on a moose-sighting hunt. Never found a moose, but it was one of the neatest things we've ever done. Every year, since then, the boys and I get dh some sort of moose item for Christmas. This year, during our UP trip, I found a beautiful matted moose photo; I just need to buy a frame for it. And I also found an insulated "moose" coffee mug. He needed a pair of sweatpants, so those will be under the tree, too.
Aside from that, dh just likes a clean and relaxing home (working on that!) And I am going to make his favorite fruitcake (he really does like the stuff, and I use his mom's recipe- it's a non-bake one, with graham crackers...it's really not too bad. )
The boys and I are going to a do-it-yourself pottery place where they have ornaments that you paint, then they fire. They look beautiful, aren't expensive, and dh will get one of those, too.
I know dh would love a night away...but that isn't in our budget at this time. Good luck with your brain-storming!

My dh is the same way. He's not as picky as I am about what "clean" means so that's not hard but he really does appreciate when things at home are going well so I work on keeping that in place. But then his "love language" is acts of service so that makes sense.
Oh and favortie foods --yes that he enjoys those as well!
He's a weight lifter so I'll be buying him the whey protein he likes (but doesn't buy for himself very often because of the cost) and also schedule him a massage at the Y.
