This year's US postal service issue of the annual Madonna & Child stamp:
Raphael, "Madonna of the Candelabra" (1513), tondo (circular painting), oil on panel, Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.
Posted an art study with the 2007 Luini, Madonna of the Carnation stamp that year. Think we should revive the tradition of studying the current Madonna stamp. It is a opportune time to focus on this work since we will all be seeing it so much on Christmas envelopes.
Will post more for an art study in subsequent posts later.

University of Dayton's Marian Library has this web page with most of the Christmas Madonna stamps from the beginning (1966) through 2002. Guess they haven't updated the last 9 years. Though a few are missing it is a nice place to see each year's stamp with the name of the work and the artist.
Several years ago we collected all the Madonna stamps to date and made a poster. Then I had the kids look up each of the artists and the year of the work to include with the stamps.

Welllll...I have a very extensive collection of old Christmas cards/envelopes we have received, so started there. But we also have the great local option of the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library. It is a stamp collecting library and they have boxes of inexpensive used US postage stamps, all sorted by year and catalog number so very easy to find them. For the kids there is no cost. For adluts only 5 cents each. Another good reason to visit Denver, I think... (that and the Rockies and TEBOW!)

Madonna of the Candelabra, Raphael, 1513
Link of information on the painting from the Walters Art Museum where it is on display. This link has anice "explore object" feature for moving in close to see the images better.

This site is a coloring page collection of Madonna and Child works by famous artists. It has a couple coloring pages of Raphael's paintings. One of them is this one -  . Click on link - it is the first image.
I'm going to check later and see how many of the images are past US Madonna & Child postage stamps as well.

I'm hoping you'll fill in for the last 9 years? I have always wondered if there were duplicates!
Love all this! Can't wait to show my boys.
I just wanted to add a little "art project" that the children can do. I just did this on my retreat, but it's inspired by the prayer corner in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd atrium.
Scripture or Prayer Cards: I save Christmas cards from years and years, and friends and family give me their leftovers. I save the fronts and use them for crafts. But many (if you have religious families) I have gotten over the years have images of the Madonna and Child...some of the ones on these stamps, although I don't remember seeing this year's before.
For the younger children, just have small scripture passages related to Advent or Christmas. Some are the same passage, just longer depending on age and writing ability:
Prepare!
Prepare the way for the Lord.
Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
Glory to God in the highest
Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will. (new Roman Missal translation).
Hail Mary, full of grace.
The Lord is with thee.
I am the handmaid of the Lord.
Be it done to me according to thy word.
Blessed art thou among women.
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.
All these I would put a citation at the bottom, but I didn't mark it down here.
Have various cardstock for the verse. This could be copywork in print or cursive or calligraphy. There were so many who wanted to practice their cursive and make it beautiful.
And then the fun part is decorating the page. I had a box of small squares of beautiful paper and holy cards and Christmas cards. I just bought some gorgeous Florentine paper from Paper Mojo. Their delivery was super fast, and the paper will last forever if I'm using for this, because I only did small 3" squares for trimming with fancy edged scissors, making small corners, etc.
Laminate if you wish. Then get a little easel or display stand to stand up the prayer card on your little prayer corner in your home.
Now we did one prophecy card today as one of our main works, and that was "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light." Isaiah 9:2. The atrium here uses scroll paper like this from Staples or AC Moore, writes the verse, trims around, and then pastes on a larger purple cardstock (12x12 or larger, but trim the sides) and then laminate.
It's very lovely, and the scroll paper is very fun to come up with other projects.
Anyway, long winded just to give a quick idea (as usual).
