I'm slated to bake the pies for our Thanksgiving dinner. One kind I want to make is pecan pies, but I was thinking of trying a recipe without corn syrup.
Has anyone done this successfully? Can you share your experiences? recipes?
I found a few recipes online:
Pecan Pie Corn Syrup Free
Another version with a bit of chocolate
I have to say, adding the liquor to the pie always makes it better.
All Recipes version
Thanks for any help!

Alton Brown says to use golden syrup, which is made from sugar cane syrup.

Gotta believe AB lol - I <3 him...either golden syrup or maple syrup should work. The other option is a simple sugar + water syrup.
We are a corn free family due to allergies ;) so many subs for corn syrup around here.

Oh, I was wondering about a nice Maple syrup, too, Angi! It was just a thought though - I don't have any experience with a substitute, Jenn. Sorry!

Happy Thanksgiving, Jenn! I found this maple pecan pie, which looks easy and positively confession-worthy! Southern food is simply amazing. Haven't made it myself, but it's tempting!

Moosewood Cookbook has a lovely maple walnut pie! It isn't pecan but it is made with maple syrup and lots of goodness!

I would do a either a maple syrup+Lyle's golden syrup or a molasses (or Lyle's treacle)+maple syrup one.

It seems maple syrup would completely change the taste...seems kind of funny to mix the Southern pecan with the Northern maple syrup. It will taste good, but I'm just saying!

That's true.... stick with the Lyle's golden syrup then :) or a combo with black treacle. I was going to suggest brown rice syrup, but I'm not sure how that would go....

So no one has gone forward and tried a totally different recipe? Just the substituting route?
Thanks for all the suggestions. I haven't been able to find the Golden Syrup, but I'll be looking in another store or two.

I have looked in all of our local stores for Lyle's Golden Syrup for another recipe and haven't had luck either. I keep wondering if I'm looking in the wrong place or something...I've checked with the baked goods, with the honey, with the imported foods--nothing!

I think I've seen the Golden syrup with the pancake syrups.

And we're going to try a Chocolate Pecan Cobbler this year.
As far as using the corn syrup in recipes, at least in candy/fudge recipes.. there's some actual chemical type of process.. if I recall.. it was something about how you mix the types of sugar to keep the sugar from crystalizing prematurely.

too late for this year, but in case you want to go the Amazon route sometime, they have lots of choices.
I see someone has already suggested Steen's! Great choice also. And yummy for gingerbread too.

Following up to say I used this recipe and it's WONDERFUL! I used the Pate Brisee (sp?) recipe with 2/3 butter and 1/3 lard (non hydrogenated from natural sources).
It was really, really good. I don't even like pecan pie, and I thought this was outstanding. The pecans really matched the flavor. My BIL is a pecan pie connoisseur, and rated this really, really high.
I would make it a deeper pie pan next time...mine was very shallow so didn't have enough custard, but otherwise 5 Stars!

I just found Lyle's Golden Syrup! The containers are small little glass jars, so I wasn't looking for them when I spotted it. I'm not sure all the areas the chain Harris Teeter is located, but mine in Northern Virginia had the syrup! It was in the baking section next to the corn syrup -- a logical place.
