Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone use any level of the Spelling Wisdom by Sonya Shafer at Simply Charlotte Mason?

I'm trying to find a copybook way of teaching the different principles of mechanics and even grammar for that matter! This looks like the closest thing. Although it's initial purpose is spelling.

So if you have seen them or used them, do you think we'd be getting some mechanics and/or grammar out of them? Are the grades matched well with their book levels?

I'm using level 1 with my daughter for dictation. She is 10 years old and has dyslexia. It has been GREAT for her. We use it to address spelling, punctuation, grammar--whatever comes up within the passage.

I have used all the levels of Spelling Wisdom at some point. My high schooler is in Book 4, and my 6th grader uses a mix of Book 1 and Book 2 right now.

Spelling Wisdom is set up to work in a way assists a home educator in studied dictation lessons as proposed by Charlotte Mason. The purpose of a studied dictation lesson is to teach spelling, grammar/mechanics/usage through noble and worthy thoughts that a student studies and then writes as you dictate (read the studied dictation selection aloud).

Yes, but indirectly. If you order these books, it's important for you to realize that what you will receive is a book that contains 140 selections that you may then use for studied dictation lessons. YOU will have to provide the instruction for grammar and mechanics. This is not hard, by the way! I use a couple of good grammar book references to assist me:

** The ABC's and All Their Tricks
** The Elements of Grammar
** The Harbrace College Handbook (mine is an old 10th edition which I used in high school)

The post I linked above has a dialogue and an example of how we do a studied dictation lesson. The Spelling Wisdom books are a big help, and useful tools! But, if you are looking for scripted grammar lessons incorporated with the selections, you won't find that in these books. One lesson simply contains one worthy quote from literature or history or the Bible, etc.

I think so, but you would be a better judge of individual children and their needs so I highly recommend downloading the sample pages SCM offers on their website! My 6th grader can sometimes write the selections in Book 2, but after a bit the quotes/expressions were way over his head, so we moved back to Book 1.

You might want to read over the other Spelling Wisdom threads and perhaps even some of the (many) threads on dictation.

Hope this is a help in your consideration, Kacky!

My mistake! I don't have Book 5 yet! Next year, my high schooler will start it!

I am using all levels and am finding my children have improved dramatically in all areas.

I would place them on the higher end of expectation. As some of my children are not where they should be, they are using the book below grade level.
