Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

With the holidays coming up, I wanted to remind everyone to keep your purses on your body at all times when out in stores.

Yesterday my sister had her purse stolen from her shopping cart at Walmart... but this was a creepy crime. A lady followed her into the store and kept "bumping into" her in the aisles, even though the store was not crowded. My sister had her purse well hidden at the bottom of her cart with groceries piled on it, but her purse was still taken.

Her car was also then stolen, but fortunately all were recovered, minus the cash in her wallet. Security said this was a planned crime- the thief watched her enter the store, saw her hide her purse, knew where her car was, etc.

So please, keep your purses with you when out shopping. Do not leave them in your cart and ask your kids to watch them while you dash into the next aisle . This was a good wake up call for me!

Wow, I'm glad everything was recovered and she's okay. But yuck!

Thanks for the reminder!

Oh, what a nightmare!

We lived in Italy long enough for me to have a healthy fear of pickpockets and purse snatchers. When I am shopping, my keys are in my pocket, not my purse. My purse is only in my shopping cart if the strap is looped (preferably doubled) around my wrist. On trips overseas, the purse carries water bottles and tissues, and all the important stuff is strapped around my middle in a money belt. (Yes, it is uncomfortable. I've had too many friends come home from ruined vacations, thanks to pickpockets, to care about that minor discomfort.)

My friends and family laugh at me because I take precautions, but...in this economy, I'm sure I'm not the only one noticing an uptick in petty crime. It's better to be prepared.

(Side note: If you do not check every transaction on your credit card statement every month, start now. Credit card fraud is a real pain. I can tell you all about it. )

I always loop mine (and lock it) through the child seat belt. Those things can be hard to open. I have had trouble at times getting it open to get my purse out

Gosh, I guess I always am afraid to leave it in my cart, so I carry mine. I bought a new purse, but also carry inside a little crossbody purse (mini-hipster from Vera Bradley) which has my key items, so I wear that in the grocery store with minimal interference. The big non-valuable stuff stays in the car.

An acquaintance once had her purse stolen right off her body. It was a long, cross-body strap, too. She fought for it and he still got it. Now she has this nifty little gizmo that is attached inside her purse and hooks to her clothing (by clip) or wrist (by strap). The strap is connected to the part in the purse. If the strap disconnects from the interior part, a hiddeously loud alarm goes off. I guess the idea is that the noise will attract too much attention and the bad guy will drop the purse.
