Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know very little about it, really. The last time I went, it was called Letterboxing and we went at a local nature center. Many of the caches were defunct and we mentioned it at the center. She said something like, "We're switching everything to geocaching and I forgot this one." That was a long time ago; I don't have a gps; and I never went again.

A few weekends ago at at Father/Daughter campout, my husband and daughter had a BLAST geocaching! That was by far the favorite activity of the entire weekend.

So I still don't have a gps (not a very tech-y person) but it is something I'd consider purchasing the family for Christmas.

I really do NOT like carrying a cell phone (it gives people the impression that I want to be called ) so the idea of investing in a phone with gps app doesn't really appeal to me but I'd consider it, I guess.

Buying a a cool gps-only gadget looks fun and kind of Indy the Next Generation but spending a lot on a thing that performs a single function seems . . . wrong somehow. I don't know why.

So, what do you use? is it possible to have an awsome time geocaching with a mid-range (as opposed to high end) gps unit?

Please give me any and all advice!

We haven't geocached so can't speak to the gps question. Just clarifying that though similar since both are "treasure hunting", letter boxing and geocaching are different hobbies. Letterboxing is low tech - involves finding the hidden letterboxes only from clues and riddles. Geocaching uses coordinates so you need the gps. With geocaching you get little prizes from the cache and you leave a trinket behind. With letterboxing you record your find by stamping in log books (your own and the hidden one). You don't need a gps for letterboxing. We haven't actively letterboxed in a few years but did quite a bit in the past. I wrote about the hobby as a learning opportunity here.
