Inspired by the 24 hour Readathon we missed in October, my kids and I have decided to dedicate next week to lots and lots of reading. It's not like we don't read a lot already, but since we have been so busy lately, and we are getting ready to go out of town Thanksgiving week and a couple of us are rather sick of geometry (I won't name names) and I don't think there are too many other things on the calendar, it seemed like a good week to READ.
If you would like to join us, you can post about your reading on this thread or on a blog and link here. The only rule I laid down for my kids was, MOM GETS TO READ, TOO. I, of course, will be reading to my kids - more than usual! - but the point is that *everybody* gets to spend some utterly decadent amounts of time reading whatever the heck they want. So my 12 yo has been giggling about picture books. Audio books also count, since my 8 yo is planning his very own "audio book Lego-a-thon".
We've gotten a head start today because all 5 of my 8 and youngers have come down with an icky cold. So far I've read about "vampire fish" (lampreys), fire ants, how to examine scat, and WWII artillery. This is apparently what boys want to think about when they are sick.

I love this Angela! This is how the colder months feel to me, and one of the reasons I love this lifestyle. When things cool off and colds start to set in (or we just feel like cuddling up, or mama is tired/sad/unmotivated/etc.), there is nothing like dropping everything and curling up with books. We take these reading binges on an as needed basis, and they always refresh us.
I hope you had a wonderful week reading with your children - they are blessed!

I have to ask because my 10 year old is a huge LEGO fan. Is the "audio book LEGO-a-Thon" listening to a lot of books on CD (or whatnot) while building lots of LEGO creations at the same time? Forgive me if this is obvious, but I'm quite interested in this idea.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Dana

Yes, that's what he meant. We all asked him how that was different than what he did every day.
I just posted on my new blog about reading from our "Reading Week", but I forgot to mention the audiobooks!

Great idea! I don't think my littles would comply but I am filing this away for down the road!
