I am looking for some good quotes for copywork. My children are 1st and 2nd grade. Is there a good resource for finding Catholic quotes anyone can recommend? Or do most of you just search and compile your own? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Amy

We usually use Favorite Poems Old and New because we use those poems for memorization work.

As for Catholic quotes maybe you could just use sentences out of the saint stories you are reading.

Another favorite of a good friend is to use the St. Joseph Catechism questions for Copywork.

For my little people and copywork, I usually choose something very simple that reinforces whatever they're reading from at the time. It's usually something they've read aloud to me. Simple Lois Lenski poetry is another favorite here. If they're reading fairly well, we move to the basic prayers of the Church next (Sign of the Cross, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, etc.)

My 1st graders aren't usually doing copywork, but my 2nd grader is. (1st graders are usually writing/copying letters and they might be copying simple words if they're starting to read, but not copywork) The important thing here is to KEEP IT REALLY SHORT AND SIMPLE! The purpose of copywork is best effort in penmanship and they're still mastering letter formation, so I keep selections short and simple enough not to be overwhelming so they can give best effort. At this age they're still developing that fine motor control that lets them write, and write neatly. And I don't want to overwhelm them with too much writing time so that it becomes a chore they never want to return to.

Thank you! That's very helpful. We already do short passages from the Bible, stories we're reading, and poetry. I have been scheduling a different type of passage for each day of the week, just to get a variety. They only work on one passage a day for about five to ten minutes. Since they don't finish the passage, they just come back to it the next week and work for another 5-10 minutes. When it's completed, they get to decorate the page.
My first grader has wonderful handwriting, but she's an average reader. My second grader struggles with fine motor skills like handwriting, but reads above his grade level.
I like the ideas about using Catechism questions and prayers for copywork. Thanks again. I'm so glad to be part of this forum. It's like having a homeschool conference right on the computer!
