Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our parish has just ( as of two days ago) opened a perpetual adoration chapel. We have signed up to do one hour every Friday and I am/ was very excited. But as the day approaches, I am beginning to get worried. I have 2 boys 7 and 9 and I looking for ideas for what would be appropriate to have to keep them occupied, during that hour.

SO far I have biographies of the saints ( they both read very well) and a couple of other books with the religious theme, but that would cover 3 - 4 weeks.

I could take the magnifikids along and have them read that.

Any other ideas or quiet file folder kind of games that would be appropriate? Are file folder type games even appropriate?

Our chapel has a prayer intention book in a three-ring binder. Everyone writes in it, but it is beautiful to read what the children have written. Maybe they could add their own personal intentions each week.

Other ideas:

-Praying the Rosary
-Memorizing a prayer they are trying to learn (Act of Contrition, Penitential Rite, etc.)
-Memorizing a passage from Scripture
-Reading the Church's readings for the day (I like to bring my Magnificat for this)

Perhaps you could encourage them to only read one chapter of their saint book each week, so that the books will last over several weeks or months. For the rest of the hour, they can do some of the other things on the list.

What a beautiful opportunity!! I look forward to a time when I can bring my kids to the chapel. My season will come, though.

Here are some things we did during adoration:

Sing songs
Practice scripture memorization
Read bible stories
Coloring Books
Liturgical Year Copywork
List and decorate a page of things you're grateful for
Draw a picture of the tabernacle
Read alouds--saint stories, Angel Food Stories
Read Picture Books from Catholic Mosaic
CGS presentations
Play/Work with the Mini Mass Set
Work with the Priest Game set--arranging cards, etc.
Do the Stations of the Cross with our Stations of the Cross Box

During November, we bring pictures or names of people who have died and set them up somewhere in the chapel to decidate that hour to praying for them.

If certain kids were getting antsy, I would go out with them for 10 minutes or so, leaving the older ones to have "real quiet time" with our Lord.

Sometimes, I'd encourage each girl to have 5 minutes totally alone, while the rest of us were outside.

We would sometimes pick one intention for that hour of prayer, write it in big letters and then "put it up" in the chapel upon entering. It helped re-orient everyone if they started getting antsy, etc.
