Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We live within a mile of my father and my grandfather - we have to go through a path in the woods to get there. Today after homeschooling we took a walk to my father's house (the kids took turns on tractor rides, played in the frog pond, and just had a good time!). After we visited there we went to visit my grandfather.

The kids don't usually enjoy visiting him - he's 83 and in failing health. Today while we were there my oldest was using some rope to practice the knots he just learning with scouting on some Lincoln Logs. My grandfather leaned right over to watch him, and then told him to go look on the top shelf of the bookcase because he had a book about knots.

The book was actually one of his training manuals from when he was in the Navy (back in the 40s) and it has a whole chapter on knot-tying. He gave the book to my son, who's been poring over it the whole afternoon.

Oh, what a memory he'll have.

Oh, that does sound a like a treasured day all the way around, Monica! And you're right to savor it, and tuck the memory of it away for yourself, too!

It is a blessing that our vocation as mothers and home educators allow us to sometimes be quiet enough and grateful enough to just sit back and see and appreciate these small joys tucked away in places that we don't always expect. And how good God is to grant this time so that there will be the added gift of memory!

Just delightful!

What a beautiful day, Monica! And although your children may not appreciate the close proximity with with you are able to freely visit your grandfather, this will become a treasured memory in of itself as they grow older. What a blessing, a true true blessing to be so close to family. My dh lived within walking distance of his grandparents and would spend nearly all of his free time hanging out with his grandfather. What an amazing relationship that blossomed as he grew into a young man. Most people do not have the priviledge of getting to know their family in this way. ... I know I didn't, and would have loved to.

What a lovely story!

My FIL was in the Navy during the 1940's, too. Sadly, he died when ds was 5 and we were expecting dd, but my son has inherited his model airplanes and missiles (he worked in defense contracting - weirdly, when a missile program is completed, models are made), and we try so very hard to talk about Grandpa and the things he loved and enjoyed doing.

Your children will pick up tiny details about their great-grandfather that they will remember all their lives. Just keep visiting. It will all be worth it, because they will be able to share his stories with their own children.

And won't everyone be wondering about all those OTHER books on the shelves?!
