My son (14) served his first Mass ever at Easter Vigil last night. I truly never thought he'd be able to overcome his shyness and serve...and I was just glowing all night long! I have a tiny glimpse into Saint Monica's life, I think (although my son has always been a faithful Catholic); I can just imagine how she must have felt when Augustine surprised her with an act of true faith.

He says he'd like to serve again, but is worried about doing so in a big (Maryland) parish. I'm just so thrilled that he has taken this step!

I feel there's a connection between the discussions here about altar servers and my son's decision to help out last night (we had only one altar server on the schedule). Thanks once again for all your insight on this topic.

Nancy, that is wonderful! My ds (10) has been serving since he was 7 and I know my heart still swells with pride every time I see him serve at the altar. It's a beautiful thing and I hope your son will be able to continue to serve.
