I am teaching a sign language class next year, and was wondering if you have read one or more good books to your kids that had anything to do with sign language, it's history, famous people (Helen Keller)or not so famous, someone who benefitted from signing, etc.
Thanks for your ideas!

I have no clue but I have a niece that just started college and is majoring in sign language so I'll ask her. She may or may not know but I guess it won't hurt to ask.

Thanks Kathryn - that'd be great!
I do have one written by Emily Arnold McCully:
My heart glow : Alice Cogswell, Thomas Gallaudet, and the birth of American sign language

What age are you teaching? For elementary I was going to suggest the book you already mentioned having. There are some other Helen Keller picture books we've read which were pretty good. I need to look those up. And I have others to add depending on the age.
Oh, and I'm moving the topic up into the education section of the board - the forum history includes languages. Should get more responses there.

The two picture books are:
Helen Keller: The World in Her Heart
A Picture Book of Helen Keller
I know my 11 year old still likes picture books like these and these are not too simplistic so hopefully could be used.
The Handmade Alphabet
The handmade Counting Book
I haven't seen the counting book, but we have the alphabet book and it is really nice. It's very simple but I still think would be good even for those ages since it would help to visualize the sign language alphabet - sort of a mnemonic devise approach.

Hi Nique,
Not sure if you still needed anything but here's what my niece had to say:
Anything by Helen Keller will be a good book to have under your belt... as far as books go, i've read advanced books that i can give you a list of, but i've also benefitted from Sign Language flash cards and games... Some cards have the words, but the best ones have pictures and handshapes... Here's a website that may be helpful http://deafness.about.com/od/learningresources/tp/kidssignbo oks.htm ... Also, Signing Naturally is an interactive book and dvd set, it's like a lesson book and you watch the dvd and fill in the blanks (it would be wonderful for someone like Valerie or Alan, but may be difficult for young children)... My best suggestion is flashcards for itty bitty children and ASL dictionaries or descriptive books for older learners
..

Hi Kathryn,
I appreciate you asking your niece. Her advice will be taken I hadn't thought of flashcards...am going to look for those.
Signing Naturally was the text and VHS tape I used for a sign language course I took a looong time ago (the VHS might have given that away)
Thank you for getting back to me! I am looking forward to teaching the class - it's going to be fun
