Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, it isn't exactly a care package, but I am not sure what to call it. Our neighbor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and will be travelling to a hospital that is about 1.5 hours away for surgery next Tuesday. They will be putting his wife up there. The surgery is long and I expect he will be in the hospital several days. I want to put together a little bag of goodies for his wife (and him if he is up for anything). I plan to have the girls make cards for the both of them and I was thinking maybe some candy (what kind has pretty universal appeal?), some puzzle books, perhaps a roll of quarters for the vending machine, and ?? Can anyone give me some good ideas. These people are in their late 60s or early 70s. They are Catholic, so maybe a Rosary or a medal?

Thanks for your help!

Beth

notebook and pen (they might not think of it for writing things down) I assume they can plan ahead for toiltries but they might not think of kleenex or chapstick or hand lotion if it's not something they don't tend to use regularly. Hospital air can be very drying.

Maybe you could contact whoever is in charge of taking communion to shut ins to make sure they're on the list for when they're at the hospital?

You've got great ideas along with Jodie's additions. A prayer card or prayer printed from the internet. There is a nice prayer here.

I'd encourage the roll of quarters. A friend just went through cancer surgery and someone took quarters for her hubby. Often there isn't much available at odd times except vending machines.

Candy -- chocolate? M&Ms are easy to transport and eat and won't melt. Or Skittles or maybe a box or two of the $1 movie candy (gobstoppers?).

A bottle or two of water might be helpful. The drying air of hospitals tends to make me thirsty and I usually don't take enough water whenever I go anywhere.
