I'm working on a tight budget, low energy level, and very little time.
I'm just having a little birthday gathering for my son's 8th birthday on Saturday. It's all cousins, and not too many (maybe 4-6 kids?).
I have no ideas for games or fun. Nothing. The weather will be a bit cooler (high 60s) and nice.
I'm not thinking anything elaborate -- I still have to make a cake. But some fun especially physical games would be great.
Any ideas? I'm really having a tough month and I could use some help. I can't even begin to think of what to Google.

What about traditional picnic games? 3-legged race, sack race, water balloon or egg toss (warn moms ahead!), ring toss, balloon "volleyball" over a rope...
These lend themselves well to a picnic theme - red/white tablecloths, bandanna party favors (cheap at Wal-Mart, and you could tie candies/toys inside them like a hobo bag), fall decorations outdoors...

At that age my kids always loved scavenger hunts or treasure hunts for parties. They are really cheap to do - so good for budget. They do take some time to set up though.

Also carnival games are really fun for this age. I remember loving the school carnival. Anyway, Martha Stewart had this carnival themed party idea. I particularly love the squirting ping pong balls off the golf tees - fun!

We had a dress up relay for oldest ds's ninth birthday (many, many years ago), which we held at a local park on a cool April afternoon. You simply have two piles of goofy clothes at one end of the relay, the first boys dress up as fast as they can, then run to boys stationed at the next end. The first boys have to take off the clothes, then the next group has to put them all on again. If you have enough boys they go back to the starting place, then go through the same routine, until every boy on each team has completed the goofy dress-up run. We always had a costume closet full of old men's ties, hats, vests, etc. so there was no cost involved and lots of laughs for boys and parents alike. The pictures we managed to take are some of my favorite images of his childhood

We did this for my boys' joint 4th adn 6th party. It was fun. We did tug of war, egg race (on a spoon), sack race, three-legged race, etc...
There isn't a ton of prep involved other than a rope, some sacks (we were able to get some burlap coffee bags for free from a local coffee roastery, but I've also seen them for cheap at hardware stores that sell sand by the pound), spoons, eggs, and a roll of crepe paper for a start and finish line. Maybe get some ribbons for winners?

We've done an obstical course about that age.. more prep than the picnic games but the boys love it.. you can do target shooting with water guns if that doesn't bother you.. and then the water gun can be the party favor
