Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dh says he may be offered a transfer to NY.
I looked at HSLDA's infor and am frankly not too thrilled with the idea of being so horribly regulated - it sounds scary up there!    Especially compared to Oklahoma.

Curious to know the reality perspective of hs-ers there.

Thanks!

Martha, it depends on your school district...not legally, but even so! Some districts ignore homeschoolers. Others want quarterly reports, an "IHIP" and testing every other year. It's really not too bad, except that their definition of a "competent teacher" is someone who can follow the regs.

Okayyy..
HSLDA says all those things are required of ALL home schoolers, but what you are saying is that some districts let you fly under the radar by basicly ignoring you? But you still have to keep it all together don't you? - just in case they should decide to come knocking?

Well, ours ignored us for 10 years , and this is the first year I have been required to report anything . Because I declare that I am homeschooling each year (ignored certified letter), the ball is in their court, and if they drop the ball, they cannot ask me for paperwork from the years they missed.

And, frankly, the district is not required to hold onto anything you send...I suspect it goes from my house to their office, and into the circular file, if you know what I mean.

It's a little annoying, but it really isn't that time consuming. It only takes about 10 minutes 5 times a year to give them what they want. At the end of the year you either have to write a narrative about what the child did or send in the results of the CAT or PASS test. The narrative can be a few short paragraphs long. Our district has never bothered us and friends around the state have never been bothered either. That is, if you give them the minimum of what they want they'll leave you alone. One district near us is more demanding, but basically they just make sure the families jump through the hoops that are set up. www.leah.org is the large Christian state group. If you do end up moving here it would be worthwhile to contact families in the area that you are moving so that you can learn more about the different school districts.
