We watched The Fox and the Child tonight and it sparked a whole new love of nature for our family. It is a french film, but narrated by Kate Winslet in English, and by the director of March of the Penguins. FABULOUS!! My super earthy 5 year old (the one who is always looking for critters under rocks and running naked through the woods) was so wrapped up in it - I could see her totally thinking she was in the movie.
A good motivator for nature study: During the movie, my 7 year old son commented on how he cannot wait to go on our hikes (we leave for a trip up north in a few days) and they were all talking about how we need to bring our nature journals and paints! Love when you get to see the lightbulbs go off and the imaginations sparked!
Oh, it is available through Netflix, too. Happy watching!

So glad to know about this. It sounds right up my kids' alley! They have been very into their nature journals.

The Fox and the Child is an absolutely lovely movie! Thank you so much for the recommendation!
It is well done, beautifully acted, narrated in a way that complements the film, and quite a juxtaposition against modern movies which are full of action and plot twists. This is a very quiet film (note...quiet, but not boring in the least) that acts like a nature documentary running concurrently with the story of the young girl and her love for a fox. It inspires great patience in observing nature. We were hooked within minutes.
Excellent for inspiring or jump starting nature study in your home!
Available at Amazon and Netflix and probably your library!

I was all set to buy it and then read some of the reviews about the scene at the end of the movie. People were saying they thought it too graphic and too much for little kids. my kids are 9 on down--is it really graphic? is it too much for them?

Do you think they are talking about the fox-window scene at the end?
I'm flummoxed. My girls were pretty "on edge" with the lynx-chase, but no one requested to turn it off or left the room. But, other than that, they were totally ok with it. And, we tend to be on the more-sensitive-scale, although we may be moving out of that these days.
My girls are 10, 9, 7.5, 5 and 3....who watched it.

Yes - I think they're talking about the fox scene at the end. Although, I wouldn't describe it as graphic.
The fox that the child befriends becomes panicked when her friend, the little girl, "cages" the fox in her room. The fox, a wild creature, runs around the room to try to get out until she finally just jumps from the (closed) second floor window, landing on shards of glass. It does appear that the fox is dead. There is blood, but the impact of the scene is emotive not really of a physically graphic nature - you're sort of in disbelief thinking that the fox dies. It's quite poignant as everyone realizes alongside the little girl in the movie that wild animals are just that, wild. In the end, somehow, momma fox revives and all is well...but you don't know that for a bit.
We all watched from 14 down to 3 yo, and none of my kids were upset, but if you're concerned about this scene you should borrow first and preview.

Thank you for the replies. I'll see if the library has it to preview!

I am going to say "intense". That scene is AMAZING and felt very real.
I suggested this movie to my sister, and the next time I saw their family, her red haired daughter was donning the same hair-do as the little girl.
