We will be leaving soon for the US for 4 weeks. I have no idea what kind of gluten free products are available. I have heard that there is more variety than here in Germany. I would really like to get some tips from you experienced ladies on shopping for gluten free food. What brands do you recommend? Which should I avoid? What about restaurant chains? Anything reliable?
I don't want to start buying rice flour and cornflour...I want to work with pre-mixed flours for baking while in the U.S. What mixes are tasty and EASY!
Thank you thank you!!!

Hi Stephanie,
I really like Pamela's baking mix for a flour. I can get it in large bags at my grocery store.
I can't recommend almond flour enough if you don't mind doing a bit of mixing. We really like that here.
For pasta, we like the Tinkyada brand.
I'll have to search my cupboards and come back with more ideas for you.

We are wheat free for one son, but use some gluten free products (but keep in mind we avoid egg and milk, so that colors our choices).
Glutino pretzels we enjoy.
Cherrybrook Kitchen are the cake mixes and such we use.
Tinkyada are the pasta we use, also.
Lundberg is the brand of rice we use, which is marked gluten free.
San-J makes a gluten free soy sauce
Will you have a Trader Joes or Whole Foods nearby?

I love the kinnikinnik (my spelling is probably off) brand of cake mixes. We've used and enjoyed Pamela's, Cherrybrook, Tinkyada, Glutino...just like the other ladies! There are lots of options on Amazon, Whole Foods, even regular grocery stores are carrying more GF options. There is a really good bread mix...it's by Gluten Free Pantry. You can bake in the oven or the bread maker. It was the best I've tried yet!

You ladies are all so helpful! We will have a Whole Foods store nearby. I know the brand Glutino. We have it here too. I will take your lists with me to the grocery next week!
What is your experience with eating out?
Are restaurants accomadating?

We don't eat out often, but when we do, we choose places that have things without wheat, like Chipotle. My duaghter is only gluten-intolerant, so we're not too strict about it. Recently, her grandparents wanted to take us out for her birthday. We went to Mimi's Cafe, and I read the menu with her to help her choose what would be safe. It turned out that she wanted to have eggs and bacon with fruit. Some areas will have GF offerings. My parents often have brunch somewhere that the cook always offers GF options.

If you have an Iphone, there is a really cool App called "Gluten Free Registry". Wherever you are geographically, it lets you know what is Gluten Free. :)
Chains are different in many areas.
PF Changs is a favorite.
Chipotle
Pollo Tropical
Garlic Jim's Pizza (out west--Washington only?).
Mellow Mushroom has a GF pizza, too...but you can generally find smaller places that also make GF pizzas...
Maggiano's also has some GF options...
Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe's are best for groceries...but then, you may find smaller, health food stores that are just as competitive, if not better priced, depending on your area.
Love Pamelas Baking Mix.
Love Pamelas Amazing Bread Flour.
We order both through Amazon "Subscribe and Save" to save a lot of money.
Tinkyada pastas are the best, imo.
We love Envirokidz rice bars (gf granola bars)...
Good luck!!

Another great reason to get an Iphone!
but no, I do not own one.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Please don't stop if you think of something later. I will always check in here for ideas.

We've found that more and more restaurants have GF menus. They are usually just a listing of the regular menu items that don't have gluten. On our latest vacation we ended up at a Chili's for dinner. They didn't have a lot to choose from on their GF list so I ended up getting my ds their black beans and some corn on the cob. He loved it. He still talkes about his bean and corn dinner at Chili's! Bottom line is I think you just have to ask for a GF menu wherever you go. If it's a planned outing, you can always call ahead too.
