Has anyone had any problems taking knitting needles through security at an airport? I would like to take knitting with me in my hand luggage to knit during the long flight, but am unsure if needles are considered a possible weapon. Double pointed needles specifically, but would change projects if necessary.


They are actually not any sharper than a pencil, but you just never know.

Maybe I should learn to crochet?

My mom when she flew out to visit us bought bamboo ones for her suitcase. I'm not sure if she carried them on though.

P.S. I knit and crochet and right now do prefer crocheting. It's lots of fun!    Are you on Ravelry?

Well, I think it depends on how carefully the security people search your carry-on, purse, etc. Bamboo definitely stands a better chance of going undetected, but I wouldn't be surprised if the flight attendant confiscates them if you try knitting on the flight. I really wouldn't bring anything that I wouldn't want to give up (such as a project that I am well into).

I've not tried to carry knitting on a flight, but I have had my bamboo needles and cotton dishcloth-in-progress taken away when I brought them to jury duty.
