We were invited to a friend's son's 4th birthday party in a few weeks. We aren't that close, so I don't know his interests that well and I have no idea what to give him for a gift!
Any ideas?

I would probably do art supplies. Most kids enjoy them, and you don't have to worry about duplicates since they're consumable. Maybe something that could be used outside, like sidewalk chalk/paint? We go through sidewalk chalk really quickly here.

That year, my son got CARS glitter glue pens from his godmother. They were a HUGE hit with the 4 year old and his brothers, plus, they were cartoony and branded, which he liked, but consumable so they could eventually disappear, which I liked.
Another gift in this category the boys loved was a GIANT Thomas the Tank Engine coloring book. Giant as in the pages are the size of poster board. Lots of fun, but again, consumable.
Giant floor puzzles are good for that age, though, we have gotten a couple of duplicates over the years since word got out that my boys liked them, lol.

Zingo is a favorite around here!!! Or you could buy them a small gift (a car, sidewalk chalk, etc) and also buy them a good book (My Father's Dragon, Boxcar Children, etc).

My dc love Toobs. A fun gift for that age would be something like the space toob with a space sticker book to go with it. Toobs are good for hours of fun around here still.

My second son loved anything to do with bugs or other creatures at that age - book, bug boxes, ant farms, etc.

A favorite for us is a movie bucket. Inexspensive bucket of any type, filled with popcorn packets, Twizzlers candy, a 2 liter bottle of soda, and a gift card for a movie rental. I particularly like gifts that get used up and don't add to the glut of stuff that we all have with littles. This gift has always been a hit when we have given it.
