I'm trying to plan my second-grade son's American history for next year, and I can't decide whether I'm doing enough. I should note that he is generally not enthusiastic about doing school and is still struggling to read, so piling on a challenging history curriculum would not be good. I want him to enjoy it and retain at least a general idea of how the U.S. began. Sooo... here's what I was thinking. Please be honest and tell me if this is no good!

--Native Americans History Pockets
--Seton's American History for Young Catholics
--D'Aulaire books: Leif Erikson, Columbus, Pocahontas, George Washington, Buffalo Bill, Abraham Lincoln ...

I'd be doing the history pockets first, then interspersing Seton with the D'Aulaire books to make it all chronological. Do I need a textbook-type book to tie it all together so it's not just a random string of books? I saw that Mater Amabilis recommends H.E. Marshall's This Country of Ours, but honestly, I don't think my ds could handle that. Not the best attention span.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
