Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A friend and I were talking about the JASON project for our older daughters. I browsed the webpage, but would like to have some first hand experience.
If you have been involved with the JASON project will you please explain how it works.
Thank you!

Is this the program with Robert Ballard that we caught on PBS last month?

The JASON Project is a science curriculum that schools and homeschoolers can buy and participate interactively in. It is a full year curriculum, including Parent Guides, student books, videos and a year subscription to the on-line site with Labs and chatrooms and message boards. There are several topics to choose from now each year as the program grows.

I first taught JASON X: Rainforests in 1999 and loved it as a teacher and the students were very engaged, an exceptional program. My current connection with JASON comes through NOAA's Aquarius Habitat where Bob Ballard performs alot of his expeditions and experiments.

Aquarius is currently running an 18 day NASA mission training astronauts for space - all their t-shirts read "The surface is NOT an option" this time around- as well as experimenting with tele-robotic medicine. As in, a doctor physically in Canada will perform surgery on a dummy in Aquarius. You can view the live web-cams (definitely check it out at night as the fish swarm around the lights) read Aquanaut profiles and e-mail them, and download lesson plans.

I recommend both sites highly. Check them out!

I was involved with the Jason project from the very first satellite cast. I highly recommend it. Do check to see if there is a local satellite center (I think the NG society is the uup-link site in DC). When you are on site, the kids get to try the equipment by up-link, moving the probes and mini subs, and may get to ask questions of the researchers. The list on the website is not complete (it does not include my site ), so you might want to check with your local school district to find the site nearest to you.

If you want to get an idea about what the video simulcasts are like, check them out streaming at this link.

I think the nicest thing about Jason, aside from the satellite real-time up-link, is the living books connection. The program is nicely integrated across disciplines.

Do you do this in a group setting, like a co-op? How much time does it require each week? Is it once a week or daily? Can struggling learners suceed?
It looks really cool.

Mary Chris, I have heard of folks using it as a coop project, but we use it alone. I find it very effective for struggling learners, as it uses many kinds of media, and it is modifiable, up or down, as you need to fit a child's learning style.

And because you grade it, you use it as you see fit. You can even reuse the materials in a few years, as the kids get older.
