Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We went to Mass today, in a different church from usual, and when I went up to recieve Father made a joke as he made the sign of the cross on the children's foreheads and then said the punchline cracking himself up as he handed me the Blessed Sacrament. I was astonished, frankly and kind of said "amen?" in a puzzled way. I'm not sure if it is still a valid communion (for me, as it was obviously a true Mass etc) as he never said Body of Christ. Are there are rules about this?

(It was a strange Mass - at the end he had three women up front to give them certificates and was hugging and kissing them while we were all supposed to be clapping!)

Validity would be whether or not the hosts were truly consecrated. How you receive or how the Body of Christ is distributed does not change the validity.

However, it sounds like it was either irreverent or illicit but that doesn't change the Presence of Christ and your reception.

Thanks for your input. It was a surprise. Father is new to the church we went to comparatively and I think it is unusual for him to see little children there, and he was trying hard to be very welcoming and friendly - which went a bit far.

It's hard to see priests not behaving properly. I took my kids to Mass one winter morning when I had just 4. There was a visiting priest and when I went up to receive Communion, he said for everyone to hear, "You should be arrested for bringing your children out on a day like this." I couldn't believe any priest wouldn't be happy to "let the little ones come."

A priest once told us that no matter what kind of man the priest is, as long as the form is there, as in words of consecration, it is Christ's Body.
