Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can anyone tell me whether Heifer International has a Catholic basis? If not, does it have a decidedly anti-Catholic base? I thought I might give my teens an "other-centered" Christian-oriented gift this Christmas. What do you think?

I would rather use the gift catalog on Food for the Poor. FFTP gives 96% of donations directly to their programs. They are Christian, but not denominational. However, Mr. Mahfood is Catholic and Pope John Paul II blessed this organization. Also, I heard about it for the first time in mass by a priest who works for them. So, while it isn't just Catholic, it is definitely not anti-Catholic. It has animals you can gift just like Heifer International.

A charity group I was in used to raise money for Heifer International and their organization was very inefficient. At the time (a few years ago), less than 50% of the donated money actually went to their program and the rest was for administrative fees, etc. I received their annual report since I raised money for them. I just went to their website and couldn't find any info on how much goes to charity which always worried me. If a charity doesn't post it where it is easy to find on their website, it usually isn't good news! They might have changed, but probably not. I am not sure if they are anti-Catholic, but I would think not.

I also like Food For the Poor, although I have also given to Heifer Project in the past. I think both organizations do a lot of good, though I am sad to read that HP might be less efficient than I thought.
