Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Brother Jerome and the Angels in the Bakery.

Has anyone read this one by Fr. Dominic Garramone?

I have not read it, but I really enjoy Father Dominic. I just requested our library to carry the book and his Thursday Night Pizza.

You ladies are too funny! This is his first children's book, so I'm interested to see it.

Years ago he had a baking bread show on PBS. It was wonderful! I only caught it a few times. Since then he has republished some of his baking books and writing more. His books are wonderful, too. There's a great spiritual connection with the baking of bread...

Here's an older article on him. The Breaking-Bread site no longer is active.

My library did stock the book, and I just got it today. I really, really love it.

This book is perfect for illustrating the presence of angels and devotion to our guardian angels.

Brother Jerome has a wonderful devotion to his angel, who wakes him up every day to do the baking for the monastery. His abbey opens up a public bakery, and he struggles with getting any customers. The only visitors are the angels, because the aromas remind them of heaven. Brother Jerome can see them, but others can't -- but it is these angels that give the nudge for the beginning of customers.

It is very sweet and reverent, illustrating the patience, obedience, prayerfulness, of Brother Jerome, his Abbot, the encouragement of the angels...

I reread it with the boys tonight and wanted to add one small caveat. Father does take a few liberties with the angels coming to the bakery. They say the bakery aromas remind them of heaven, and Father is happy they are there, so they won't get homesick.

That of course, plays with the doctrine that angels view the face of God at all times, and spiritual beings wouldn't be "homesick". I just want to point that out...

There is some wording about Brother Jerome's talent as a baker...it isn't until closer to the end that the hierarchy of his gifts is explained...it's a gift from God. When you have a gift, you shouldn't be ashamed, but practice and use it well.

The boys loved it. The end has Brother Jerome saying the Angel of God prayer, and both my boys started praying it with me as I read it aloud.

I didn't mention the illustrations before, either. It's interesting how the angels are depicted, see-through, but a bit one-dimensional when other people are present. Having the traditional habits and tonsures are delightful to see.

I think it is supposed to be placed in an older time, because the dress of the people is older, but some of the bakery goods mentioned I think are definitely our centuries. But that is just a minor thing!

You lucky duck, Jenn! Thanks for the review. I wish my library was as go-to as yours. The book sounds great.

Well, I have to say I'm surprised! I didn't view them as "go-to" but perhaps my requests are varied enough to get filled?

I've been encouraged by the number of requests I've had filled (almost 100%), so I keep asking for more and more. Greedy, aren't I? They have stocked many of the new Ignatius/Magnificat children's books. The tricky part for me is to ask for it when it's new, so it can only be one year old or issued this year.

I feel like we're doing this back and forth thing with our library. They have budget restraints, so they started charging 25 cents per book for online reserve. Now they are lifted it, but limiting the amount of reserve to 8 books per library card.

Honestly, I'd rather pay the money. I feel like my wings are clipped. I've got to get dh to get a card now so I can at least reserve 24 books at a time.
