We are doing an informal history/geography this year (my kids are 5 and 3). We are going to spend a couple of months on each continent. I am going to start with North America. I would love to hear some recommendations of books I could read about any of the countries in North America. I would like to read about kids in the countries, heroes from the countries, animals or geography, fairy tales or stories, etc! I am going to get most of the books from the library, but will probably buy some as well. Thanks in advance!

If you can find them.. Collier's Junior Classics "Just Around the Corner" (book 4) is "excerpts from warm-hearted stories of other lands" but the stories are nice. Sometimes they're excerpts from longer books.. sometimes they're the whole short story. My mom had the whole set and I still remember a lot of the stories. And some of my favorites were the folk tales from other lands and our own.

I got a book and a Jim Weiss CD about Tall Tales. Thanks for the recommendation. I am looking into the Just Around the Corner book (are all of them good because all I can find is a set of 10 books).
Any recommendations about Canada, the Caribbean or Latin America? Thanks!!!

well they're all different.. but I think they're pretty good. Most of the longer stories are excerpts from books. I have Magic in the Air at hand.. and it has excerpts from
Pinnochio, Alice in Wonderland, The Borrowers, Miss Hickory, Winnie-the-Pooh, Freddy the Detective, Mischief in Fez, The King of the Golden River, The Wind in the Willows, Peter Pan, The Twenty-One Balloons, and The Princess and the Goblin.
So it would depend on your feelings of books filled with excerpts. I think they definatley have a place.. some children might be much more inclined to try out a "short story" than a full novel, and once they discover they like the story, then the novel isn't so intimidating. Or it can be a way to as you're asking about.. cover a lot of areas briefly.

I'm thinking along the same lines for the fall. I'll be using A Child's Geography of the World by Hillyer as our spine, but I'm still looking for others to complement.
I can't give you a personal review but I'm planning on getting Around the World in 80 Tales sounds like it would work well with little ones. This is the other one I was thinking about.

Here is a collection of books about North American animals that we compiled a few years back -US / Canada animal books.
I also recommend folk tales and tall tales like Jodie mentioned. If you search the particular names (Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan, John Henry) you'll find some mentions of good picture books in past threads.

For Latin America I recommend the book, Stories from the Americas (by Frank Henius and illustrated by Leo Politi). It is a collection of short stories from Central and South American countries - one for each country. The story for the Dominican Republic is Our Lady of Alta Gracia our 4 Real board patroness. We love Politi's special illustrations. The book is oop but worth finding if you can get from library, etc.

We built our own FIAR-style plans for my K-er/1st grader this year and it included stories from all over the world. A couple of the books we used were:
Very Last First Time (Canada)
My Little Island (Montserrat- Caribbean)
Have you invested in the Children Just Like Me book yet? It's a great tool... and often used in our Social Studies.
If you want a couple saints to research from N.America there are threads on that somewhere around this forum... but immediately in my mind are St. Isaac Jogues, Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Juan Diego, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Bl. Miguel Pro...

Yes, I have this and I love it! It is going to be my "spine." I also have Around the World in 80 Tales which is really nice with stories from all over the world.
Thanks for all of your help! Please let me know if you think of anything else, especially something that talks about the different types of geography of the US: deserts, mountains, lakes, etc.

I have a series I really like about North America habitats written by Marianne D. Wallace. There are six books about different habitats, including deserts, forests, mountains grasslands, seashores, and wetlands. Here is a link to America's Forests.
These are written for an upper elementary level, but they do have nice maps and full page colored spreads showing the animals of the various regions. You might be able to find them at your library.
