I would love to hear about your thoughts on an ancient history spine for my ds (5th-6th grade) and dd (4th grade). I would like to combine them this year and am a bit overwhelmed with the many great "living books" postings on this subject.
I will definitely use living books to suppliment, but would like a spine to keep us on track. It not...I tend to end up far away from where I thought we were heading.

I had a chance to peruse the "Famous Men of Rome" and "Famous Men of Greece" books a couple weeks ago; I'm always on the fence about things that don't have perfect reviews on Amazon but I was really impressed with these books! I think they'd be IDEAL for the age range you are talking about. And I also think teaching history through biographies is a fantastic way to keep things interesting for children. Both books have Student Guides to accompany them if you want some kind of workbook accountability (reading comprehension, vocabulary, fill in the blanks, essay prompts, etc.)
I wish they had a "Famous Men of Egypt" also, I'd like to have a broader focus on Ancient History than just Rome and Greece but we'll be filling that in with lots of other books (mostly from the Connecting w/ History booklist)

We used both of these books with great success. We used Greenleaf Guide to Ancient Egypt, too.
The series continues with the Middle Ages, and gets to be more problematic...you would definitely want to preview it before choosing, because it's written from a Protestant perspective.

Not that I want to add to your many wonderful choices, but my dd (6th in fall) will be using Dorothy Mills' by Dorothy Mills as her spines. I linked to the Memoria Press website which has them along with study guides if you need them. As a family we're using parts of the Famous Men series.

I'd quite happily second Elle's recommendation of the 'Famous Men'. I've used them and found them terrific, we also loved the Greenleaf guides.
This time round I'm also using SOTW1 and my dd's 9 & nearly 7 are loving them.  Both girls haven't liked history before. I'm finding SOTW series is working well with my children who learn with an 'overview' approach.

Another vote for Story of the World - it has taken us FOREVER to do volume 1 because it sparked such love for the subject - we have enjoyed really digging into history.  My children LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

My son really likes these also.
Another possibility would be The Story of the Romans or The Story of the Greeks. Eva March Tappan has written similar books you can find online for free or at amazon.

If you go that route you can also find Famous Men of Rome and Famous Men of Greece free online.
ETA: Here's a link to Eva March Tappan's works that are on The Baldin Project free. Looks like some great stuff!
