Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My daughter has been wanting to join Girl Scouts with another little girl at school. I don't want her in Girl Scouts at all. My thought was to start a Little Flowers group at our church. I honestly don't know that many people because we are somewhat new, but I would still love to do this and thought it would be a great way to get more involved and make friends.

I spoke with our DRE about it. She had heard of Little Flowers but didn't know anything about it. She gave me the email address for someone who is over the scouting program in our diocese, but I haven't emailed him yet. I really don't know that I need to since Little Flowers is not a national organization. Has anyone here started their own group, and, if so, what kind of permissions did you need in your parish?

The thing is that we will be first year homeschoolers next year    and I wonder: would this be too much to take on at once??

Advice?

It very well could be too much, but that depends on how busy you are. The first year homeschooling can be interesting and hectic until you get a working schedule.

FWIW, you can do LF on your own without a group - that's what we're doing next year. None of the local groups are close to me, and I am just not up to leading a group right now.

You also might consider doing Girl Scouts as an Independently Registered Girl, depending on why you don't want her in scouts. We do this and it has worked great - I can screen anything before we use it for possible issues. She still can earn all the patches, etc for being a scout just as if she was in a troop.

i think I would first try to gauge if there is any interest in a LF group locally...

My HS group is fairly small, and there just was not enough interest from the moms to keep a group going. We tried, but there were always schedule conflicts, etc. I thought it was a fair amount of work to do when there was not that much interest.

However, that was just my experience. I know there are many vibrant groups out there. It could be great way to meet other HS families, especially during your first year.

I haven't done Little Flowers.. but here's a thread with information on many girls groups including scouting groups other than girl scouts.

I would definately do a search (do as a phrase) for Little Flowers.. I bet it's been talked about a good bit.

Thank you ladies! I think maybe I should just ask some of the other moms what they think. I have a catalog from Ecce Homo Press, and I think I just saw on their website that they will send some promotional materials for free.

I've looked at a lot of threads and blogs that discuss LF. I would love for dd to be involved, but I don't know all the requirements for actually starting one...
