Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Ladies,

My DS 10 has been attending Boys Brigade for about 4 years now and he loves it, a great christian environment to enjoy pursuits with other like minded boys and supportive male role models. This particular Boys Brigade is a ministry of the local Baptist church and once a year they include the Boys and Girls Brigade in their morning church service, i.e showcasing their achievements, performances etc. I'd like to make sure I'm clear with how I go about explaining/discussing certain things that will come up with this. I've very briefly said to my children we will hopefully attend but as Catholics we will still need to attend Mass Sat night or the Sunday night and a small explanation for the reasons behind this.

Am I right to believe that as Catholics we can attend the above, but shouldn't participate in their communion?

I guess this is another good real life opportunity to explain our wonderful faith and why we do the things we do. Incidentally, at the moment they are discussing the books of the bible and I make sure I mention our Catholic bible has a few more books included! My son is quite a deep thinker with regards to his faith (he enjoys having his questions answered by our Priest!) He does have a deep sense of loyalty to Boys Brigade and obviously likes to be involved and I would like him (and my other girls) to be comfortable with how we conduct ourselves at this church service.

So I'm guess I'm just bouncing this off you lovely ladies and would love to hear your opinions and how you would go about explaning this.

Many thanks in advance,

Marcia

Yes, you can attend (though as you noted would still need to attend Mass for the Sunday obligation) and no you would not participate in communion. There is also a good chance they wouldn't even have communion. I don't believe most Baptist churches have communion weekly - it's more infrequent.

Canon 844.1 lays out the general rule: Catholics are to receive the sacraments from Catholic ministers, and Catholic ministers lawfully administer Catholic sacraments only to Catholics.

I like how you are considering explaining the differences to them - stressing the fullness and beauty of the Catholic Church.

There probably won't be communion. You are on the right track with your thinking.

(it's nice to see someone else with my name! wow.)

I think it's been a great experience for my kids to attend some services from other Christian faiths. They are the ones that find all the differences/similiarities.

It's easy to say "most churches have the liturgy of the word only" and that seems to make sense to my kids.

(I'm a convert from Protestantism. and I'm so happy to have a understanding of other Christian faiths...but most pleased to be in the ONE true faith and to have the fullness of truth)

My dad is Baptist and we would often go to Catholic mass, and then Baptist church. IF they have communion, just skip it. Your kids might freak out a little when they drop crumbs all over the floor and trample on them, but you can explain that. Whenever they taught weird stuff at the Baptist church, my mom would always explain afterward. I seemed to come out ok! I think Baptist VBS was more damaging to me spiritually because I didn't have anyone there to verify my doubts about Jesus having siblings and stuff. Have fun!

Thanks for the input ladies.

Lovely to meet another 'Marcia', I haven't met many in my lifetime! Do you pronounce your name with a soft 'c' or as in 'Marsha'? My name is said with the soft 'c'.
