My son received a build-your-own weather station kit for Easter and is loving it, so we have decided to do a weather study for awhile. I have compiled these resources so far:
Mater Amabilis Weather Study
The Earth by Barbara Taylor
Green Science Weather Station Kit
Science Wizardry for Kids
The Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of Planet Earth
General Nature Study Notebooking Pages from Notebooking Pages
I am really interested in some living books about weather. I feel like I have the technical aspects of weather covered... are there any good, living books out there?

Are you looking for picture books or chapter books? What age level?
Weather is such a broad stroke. There are many books on different aspects of weather: winter, storms, etc.

He is 7, but his reading level is high- maybe 5th grade?
We'll definitely do clouds, extreme weather, monitoring weather, the water cycle... and anything MA's lesson plans cover.

This is a really fun weather study. We worked on it last year!
I'll list the books we enjoyed:
NONFICTION
Tornado Alert by Franklyn Branley
Flash, Crash, Rumble and Roll by Franklyn Branley (A Lets Read and Find Out Science Book)
Hurricane Watch by Franklyn Branley
Hurricanes Have Eyes But Can't See: And Other Amazing Facts About Wild Weather by Melvin and Gilda Berger
Busy Water by Irma Simonton Black (my copy copyright 1958) (not so much about weather though it starts with a storm, but great book for reading to see what happens to all the rain water from storms)
FIELD GUIDES
Atmosphere a Peterson Field Guide
Weather: A Guide to Phenomenon and Facts by Paul E. Lehr (copyright 1957) a Golden Nature Guide (our favorite nature guide - user friendly, great illustrations!!)
The Weather Wizard's Cloud Book by Louis Rubin Sr. and Jim Duncan (this book is a little technical, but my older children loved it...so I'm mentioning in case anyone looks for a book for olders)
MISC/ACTIVITY
Discover Nature in the Weather by Tim Herd (another favorite!)

We recently read Tornado
by Betsy Byars
It is a fiction work... tells the story of a family who acquires a dog during a Tornado and names him Tornado. It is a an easy read chapter-type book that your ds might enjoy reading on his own.
We enjoyed it hugely during a weather unit study... it is amazing what storms can do, and the story of Tornado was very interesting.

A good read aloud might be some of the Little House books.. the Long Winter comes to mind.. but there was weather in a lot of them.

And Rain, Hail, Sleet & Snow (Nancy Larrick) is a great for the topic of weather. It's a scientific "living book" from the 1960's. It has that older story way of presenting science that I really like.
