Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been browsing through all the wonderful posts on suffering and all the links, prayers, and book suggestions. I have read some of these for myself and my situation, but I need to ask about something for a niece. She is 13 and struggling with the realization of having T1 diabetes. Are there any books, prayers, or other literature written so that a child may understand suffering? I loved all the resources I found on here, but many of these are very deep and not something to be easily grasped by an emerging teenager (and even I still can't grasp some of them).

Wow, that's a big one.
I think getting her a support group of kids her age who also have Type I would help her, too.

Yeah, it's going to be tough. It's been about 6 months now and the reality is setting in for her. She has friends with T1, but I'm hoping to find some uplifting material for her to read (or listen).

I don't really have anything to offer just that it can take a while for that reality to sink in and yeah it's hard because it an all day every day thing. I have two children with T1 --almost 3 years and my 6 yr. old still says every day how much he hates having it!

Praying for her!

It might help to study up on famous people who have diabetes and perhaps learn ways others have learned to cope with it. http://kids.jdrf.org/ I wish this organization (and the internet) had been around when our family first encountered diabetes!

Lara and Michele, know that your families are in our prayers.

Unfortunately JDRF quite blatantly supports embryonic stem cell research so I can't and won't support them and I don't let my children go to their site because of things like what I just linked to.

But your post reminded me that I read a while ago that St. Josemaria Escriva was miraculously cured of diabetes early in life so he would make a good intercessor for diabetes!

I'm so sorry for posting the JDRF site Michele...I had no idea they support embryonic stem cell reseasrch. I had also never heard of St. Josemaria Escriva's miraculous cure of diabetes...what a powerful and incredible intercessor for those with diabetes! Praying for him to intercede in mighty ways for all those embracing the cross of diabetes. I know firsthand, from the lives of several family members, what your families are dealing with. May God strengthen and uphold your families and the young ones who find their cross and challenges difficult to bear.

ETA: I considered removing the site link from my earlier post, but on second thought realized it is very important that others be made aware of the information you shared, Michele.
