Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Gals , do any of you have expereince with this job ? that is of Eucharistic minister ?
I was under the impression that one needed some type of training and also there would be some sort of vow or commitment one would profess in becoming a minister .
To me it is a role of deep commitment and have never myself ventured towards this .
However I was shocked on sunday at church when the owman running the now catechism program brought another owman who is a eucharistic minister up to another lady sitting in front of me. They were asking her if she wanted to serve . This woman had clearly never done this before because she was asking what she'd have to do etc. This woman is not a regular either . They clearly do not attend mass all the time either which of course I have also been gulity of but It just seemed to me in hearing stories of the Eucharist being abused thrown out etc. is it not extremely important that Eucharistic minister know what they are doing , thier commitment to Christ and some form of teaching regarding the Eucharist .
I feel ignorant on this subject and maybe I am being to judgmental ? I honeslt want to know maybe if I should bring it up with Fr. he is a faily new priest from India and from the redempdurist priests .I think he'd be upset if he knew this or feel people should have some form of tarining . but maybe I'm over reacting . I truly know I am not to point out the sin of another unless grave harm is to come to others etc. but is this not possibly the same thing ?
I just feel there should be some formal training in regards to sertving Our Lord . maybe I am just supposed to pray on this .
your thoughts & opinions on how to handle this really appreciated .
Thanks
Rox

I understand your concerns, Roxie. Here is a link from Catholic Culture that does include training as part of becoming a Eucharistic Minister. Reporting what you see as irregularities to your priest seems fitting. You can approach him with your observations, questions, and assumption of good intentions on the part of all involved, rather than any strong judgement.

Love,

My husband was an emhe at our parish where we used to live, and I know he had to have special training. At the parish where we live now he doesn't serve, but I have heard announcements and read in the bulletin that they have em training for anyone who feels called to serve. I personally don't think a person could overreact to the mishandling of Our Lord's body, blood, soul, and divinity, but I would pray for the right words to say.

(When you mentioned that your priest was new and from India I had to check where you were from. Our priest is new and from India as well! ...we live in the Bible belt, though...)

Will be praying for your situation.

While I was gathering some thoughts, I see that there have already been some responses, so some of this is redundant, but am including it anyway for the links.

Yes, you are quite correct in noting that due to the very sacredness of the Holy Eucharist, Extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist (the actual term by which they are know - though the term eucharistic ministers has perpetuated) should be trained and commissioned. It is also vital they are properly disposed as well. You are not being judgmental to realize this. In normal circumstances, Extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist are supposed to be trained and then commissioned in a special rite by the local ordinary (bishop). The local ordinary can also permit the individual priests exercising their sacred office to appoint a suitable person who in cases of genuine necessity would distribute Holy Communion for a specific occasion.

Quote:
"The person who has been appointed to be an extraordinary minister of the Holy Eucharist is necessarily to be duly instructed and should distinguish himself by his Christian life, faith and morals."
-this is taken from one of the many diocese guidelines available on line but I like the clarity of wording of what is expected.

Can. 231 §1 wrote:
Lay people who are pledged to the special service of the Church, whether permanently or for a time, have a duty to acquire the appropriate formation which their role demands, so that they may conscientiously, earnestly and diligently fulfil this role.
