Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I feel like I'm asking for lots of prayers lately!
For about 2 months I have experienced pain while nursing. I thought it was thrush, but it doesn't seem to be responding to the usual thrush medicines and my baby does not show any signs of thrush.
I am just trying to find out what it is so I can treat it. Right now, the pain is so bad I dread nursing which isn't a good thing since my baby is only 3 months old.
I'm asking for prayers that I would know what to do and the grace to continue to nurse until I get this pain taken care of. I've never wanted to feed my babies formula until now!

Becky, does it hurt on one side or both? I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the baby's technique that is causing this pain. It might be worth the trip to a lactation consultant to evaluate this.

Have you gone to La Leche?

Is it on both sides?

Is it a general soreness or a specific pain in one area?

Is it a shooting pain that seems to go up your milk glands or even into your back?

What a labor of love nursing through pain is! Your reward will be great! I've had every kind of breastfeeding problem known to man so I especially feel your pain. And by the way, regarding thrush: your baby may not necessarily show signs of it. It could be intra-ductal (*shudder*-- this was the worst kind of pain I've ever felt in that area). If you aren't treating yourself while treating the baby, you'll both just keep reinfecting each other.

Another little detail... if you are using cloth diapers, and it's discovered this IS a yeast infection, you ought to boil all those diapers and your bras and underwear... it's not fun, but it's necessary to avoid reinfection.

Best wishes!

Ouch Becky, My first nursing experience was like this, but I just think I wasn't prepared enough to know how to remedy engorgement and other wonderful nursing dilemas. I remember biting on a towel everytime I nursed for the first month or so.

Praying for you

Praying for you Becky.

This may sound strange, but has your baby been checked for tongue tie? Our two youngest were born with tongue tie. We only learned of it because an orthopedic intern noticed that the first of the two had tongue-tie when ds was crying during a cast change. With the second child, we knew what to look for. Tongue-tie means the tongue is attached to the floor of the mouth too close to the front of the tongue (I believe it's called the frenulum, but am not positive after so many years). Normally the frenulum is attached toward the back of the tongue's underside. Tongue-tie can prevent baby from being able to get a proper latch and makes for very painful nursing. Releasing a tongue-tie should normally be a very simple procedure, but we were told that doctors today are not being trained to do it, so many pediatricians are reluctant to perform the simple release. We were told Amish families do it themselves, since the frenulum is non-vascular. I hope your little one doesn't have this issue, but if that is the case, it should be a somewhat simple fix, once you find a doctor who will perform the in-office procedure for tongue-tie release. If your baby does have this condition, it could save you further agony and dear baby greater difficulty with nursing. Tongue-tie not only effects feeding, but can also contribute to speech impediments. I wish more medical personnel checked for this condition as we know of other families whose children had undiagnosed tongue-tie.

Thrush in the ducts can cause pain like that and can be significantly more difficult to treat. You don't mention what treatments you have tried but nystatin is not enough. Diflucan may be a possibility.

That article also lists other possible causes for pain.
