Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am curious how or whether you use punishments or rewards in your home.

I am intrigued by Maria Montessori's thoughts on this topic:

"Like others I had believed that it was necessary to encourage a child by means of some exterior reward that would flatter his baser sentiments, such as gluttony, vanity or self love, in order to foster in him a spirit of work and peace. I was astonished when I learned that a child who is permitted to educated himself really gives up these lower instincts. I then urged the teachers to cease handing out the ordinary prizes and punishments, which were no longer suited to our children, and to confine themselves to directing them gently in their work." --Maria Montessori

Any thoughts?

Eleven years ago when we started homeschooling we had a "school store". It was a rubbermaid box with small items in it such as stickers, crayons, gel pens, packs of gum, keychains, erasers, candy....etc. Beginning every Monday, my kids would be eligible to receive two pennies. One for their positive attitude and one for doing their school work well. If they accumulated ten cents by Friday, they would be able to buy something from the school store (each item in the box would cost ten cents.)

I believe having the store got my little ones into the habit of doing their work well....and having a positive attitude. I was pretty strict about the store. If they didn't earn a penny one day...I didn't give it to them. They'd have to wait another full week to earn all ten cents.

It really worked well and they loved it. Over the years, as they got older, we fell away from our school store. My two youngest just asked me a couple of weeks ago if I would start up another box for them. Probably a good idea....I can't seem to keep anyone on track lately. They would much rather be outside !!!

I am curious about this also. My son goes to Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, and I help out. I have not read enough on Montessori philosophy, so I do not know how discipline in the atrium should be handled. I personally prefer a more gentle discipline, without punishment and reward... what is appropriate to the atrium?

You may be interested in reading this post from the Catholic Montessori board.

Here's part of the post that I thought relevant to this discussion:

"In an AMI school, there will only be one of each material. In other Montessori schools, they will have more than one. Montessori taught that by having only one available, it taught the children how to wait and respect another child’s work. There are definite limits in an AMI school, whereas people often get the impression that Montessori means that the child can do whatever he wants. In an AMI school, if the child is not working with a material properly, then the material is taken away. So, if a child started playing train with the Brown Stair, that would not be allowed."

Oh, and that seems totally reasonable. I guess I would define that as more of a natural consequence than a punishment. There are other punishments and rewards used at the atrium my son attends, and I do not know if this is Montessori method, or the instructor's preference.
