Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone have one? My green thumb better half is interested in them. We've talked about simple shelves with plastic sheating... to more permanent 6mm double polywhatever they're called kinda walls.

The plastic is an under $100 risk, but if it's cheap, then it's a wasted $100 dollars. The more permanent is a more expensive risk, but if it lasts longer than it might be worth it.

Anywhoo... anyone have greenhouses of any kind and feel like sharing their experiences and recommendations?

Thanks!

I don't have a greenhouse. But the cheaper plastic usually lasts about a year if I remember right from what I've heard.

What I've done and I've just gotten it is.. my dh built me a cold frame with the old windows off my sister's house (I snagged them when her landlady had the window's replaced).

A cold frame is a good option and not horribly expensive if you just want to be able to start plants earlier than you can start them otherwise.

Maryan, I know this has been a while, but did your dh look into Hoop Houses?

It looks much cheaper and less permanent than a greenhouse.

How to Build a Hoophouse

Low Cost Hoop Houses

DIY Network

Loads more hits, but just wanted to relay that. I'm sure he's already figured it out.

We didn't do anything. He was undecided about what he wanted or how much work/money he thought should go into it. He talked to several friends and looked at their options but just wasn't sure which way he wanted to go.

Our neighbors have a hoop house,... and I think he asked him about it too. Although Dan is discouraged this fall about gardening because his summer crop was almost an abject failure. Even the orchard trees that he pruned and tended got over run with bugs the weekend we went away... and he got one peach. It's a good thing that the goats and chickens are doing well or he'd be very frustrated!

Thanks for the links. Come January... I know his interest in gardening will be renewed.
