I also saw some coloring books by Seton in their catalog that are saint stories, but I wasn't able to find them online.

I have used Who Am I? It is okay, but I have stopped using it. I prefer a much more gentle, less structured approach. For my K-er this year we are using a lot of read-alouds...
- Their Hearts are His Garden
- Catholic Children's Treasure Box series
- Catholic Mosaic and related literature
- New Catholic Picture Bible
- Lots of the St. Joseph Picture Books
The Who Am I? Series is a good introduction to teaching in the home, but too structured, in my experience. If you do decide to get it, the teacher's manual is a must. It is the most important part of the set, the workbooks are optional. I do like how it explains some things- like life after death. I have used their explanations when discussing things with my children.
I am not familiar with Seton's materials, but I like Mater Amabilis approach.

Early years religion in our home consists of reading together mostly. We work on memorizing the basic prayers of the Church in English and in Latin and there is some very simple catechism memorization we work on a little at a time. We occasionally do some enjoyable liturgical crafting, mostly inspired from ideas here at 4Real or from Catholic Icing.

We used Treasure Box and my Bible story books from my own childhood, plus Veggie Tales videos for fun! Young children really, really love Bible stories. K is a perfect time to introduce them.

Krista, can you describe "Who am I" a little more? What do you mean by more formal. The Seton books I listed are actually the St. Joseph Picture Books. They look really neat. I am also interested in the Illustrated Cathechism if you could give more info on that!

Sure. I'll try.
TAN COVER (1943 Imprimatur) - Illustrated Catechism For Little Children - This is a small catechism that I enjoy using for my littlest learners (K - 1). Almost every two-page spread has a full page, color illustration. These are nice and my children enjoy the pictures. I usually work on one page of questions at a time. The kids like to study the picture while I ask questions and then they answer. The little catechism contains a total of 78 catechism questions that are easy to memorize (not too wordy). The book is divided into questions covering the following sections:
:: Prayers for Little Ones - no catechism questions here...these are simple prayers.
:: God
:: The Blessed Trinity
:: The Holy Angels
:: Man
:: Our Lord
:: Sin
:: Confession
:: Communion
:: Confirmation (which I usually skip since children are confirmed at an older age than they were in 1943)
:: Reward and Punishment
:: Prayers - these are nice and helpful that they're listed so that I can ensure that the basic prayers are learned by the little ones. They include:
:: The Lord's Prayer
:: The Angelic Salutation - Hail Mary
:: The Apostles Creed
:: The Confiteor - *note* wording reflects the norms for the year 1943.
:: Act of Faith
:: Act of Hope
:: Act of Charity
:: Act of Contrition
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
There is another small illustrated catechism for children with the same name and a blue cover - this one. This catechism uses the same exact images as the other Illustrated Catechism and the questions are very similar (most identical). This catechism has 96 questions and answers and also includes a little more information - some little blurbs on saints (particularly children), and each chapter has a short section called *readings* which are really just summary points of the catechism questions for that chapter. There is a beautifully illustrated center page illustrating Sanctifying Grace that reminds me of the great illustrations that are so prevalent in the St. Joseph's Baltimore Catechisms. ** NOTE ** This Illustrated Catechism does not have an Imprimatur or Nihil Obstat. ** The inside cover states:

Jen, I'm thinking of using the Illustrated Catechism for my kinder and first grade boys in the fall. I just ordered my religion books so I'm sure they'll be here soon. I ordered the Angel Food for Boys & Girls too.
So my question is, in your opinion, do you think the Angel Food stories can be read to everyone (my dds included) and then have each work with their corresponding Catechism book: Illustrated Catechism, St. Joseph Baltimore 1 & 2? (sorry really long ?)

Oh, absolutely!! That's what I do! Sometimes, I refer to the chart that coordinates Fr. Brennan's stories with a particular lesson read that, and sometimes we just read! There is pretty much NOT a wrong way to approach reading The Angel Food books!

The Who Am I? books have guided lesson plans covering a variety of subjects- the Trinity, the church, Mass, life after death....
Each lesson is divided into three sections- in each one you do a short explanation of the subject being covered, then you might do a bible reading or craft corresponding, then there are recommended workbook pages (in the workbooks) that you can do.
