Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

While reading Devotional Stories For Little Folks, Too with my ds, we came across the description of lunch at the Peterson house, which included cool, crisp apple slices sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

I can report that it is scrumptious.... like apple pie on a plate. Just a little sugar and lots of cinnamon- so good! It is a regular menu item here now.

Have you ever found a favorite food through your reading?

Love,

That book is full of food! We ended up spending quite a bit of time trying to find a recipe for a candy Mother Wilder made with the autumn nut harvest. We finally found Penuche which I think is close. Haven't actually made this yet, but it looks yummy! Saving it for Easter...too yummy for Lent

My son likes to cook from the Redwall Cookbook- we eat Nutbread and some dish with eggs and mushrooms! He LOVED the books so it makes the cooking all that much more exciting.

We are reading Redwall now- but on cd. I'll have to look into the recipes!

I thought of Farmer Boy as well. The popcorn scene where he put his popcorn in milk always fascinated me, but when I tried it as a child, all I got was yucky, soggy popcorn. But then, a few years ago, I saw an Alton Brown episode where he said that popcorn was actuall yused as a breakfast food and that is where the man who invented cornflakes got his inspiration, and he showed that day old popcorn can be eaten like cold breakfast cereral, with a bit of sugar of course

All my memories of soggy popcorn in the bottom of my milk glass came back, but I decided that I should try it (namely because we stopped buying breakfast cereal, butI missed it ).

So now one of my favorite treats is day old popcorn in a bowl with milk and sugar, but I don't think I would have tried it if it weren't for thinking, "Hey, Almanzo ate popcorn kind of like that."

The Redwall cookbook has been a huge hit at my house. We have made the rock cakes already several times, along with October ale and a few other dishes.

I have also discovered there is a cookbook companion to The Secret Garden and The Boxcar Children.

What a fun element to add into our reading!

I checked out the Secret Garden one and just loved it!!! It was really inspiring and help me understand a bit better the text of the book.

Since we began homeschooling, I think that our favorite discovery is the cookbook companions to some favorite books.

We've enjoyed our Little House cookbook and our Anne of Green Gables cookbook as well as our American Girl cookbooks. Funny, that the Boxcar Children was mentioned here. Just yesterday, we were perusing books at a second hand store and came across the Boxcar Children Cookbook. It was in pretty poor condition, but as my daughter scanned some of the recipes, it brought back fond memories of the stories that went with them. The book was just 12 cents, so we decided it was well worth it!

Now, it seems we should look for the Secret Garden cookbook!

We enjoy this too. We read through both Winnie the Books this year and planning on going through the A.A. Milne poetry books with my younger crowd in the fall so I thought it would be fun to get a hold of a couple of the Winnie the Pooh cookbooks. I just ordered Winnie the Pooh Teatime. Poetry and Tea two of our favorites .

And speaking of fall. Ours isn't complete without some of Grandmother's Famous Cranberry Bread!

Hmmm, I don't remember where I saw the recipe, but how about Mother's birthday cake from The Seven Silly Eaters?

God bless,
Christine
