Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If you do Easter baskets, what religious items are you including this year? I am looking for inspiration.

My girls will definitely be getting more figures from St Luke's Brush They will also get a book or two that may be religious themed.

I really, really want to do the same thing - peg dolls and books. But I have a difficult time justifying the money. With 5 dc, just the peg dolls will cost $100.

Prayer cards and those glow in the dark rosaries. My children love them. We had several, but I'm not sure where they went.

Well I have not thought of a thing so really would love ideas for our 2 boys !
I would really love to purchse thisLourdes Spring Rosary from Anne's Tota Pulchra Bead Shop
I know not to buy dark organi9c chocolate bunnies anymore ! how can anyone not like dark chocolate ?
So far I know I am hiding the eater baskets in the woods out at the lake along with the Alleluia but what is going into those baskets I've no idea .
My Mum always just did bubbles & skipping ropes for us as children and the search for the baskets was the best part

I would love to get these for my children too, but as you said the cost is definitely prohibitive. As sweet as those little peg dolls are, we definitely don't have the kind of discretionary income to be starting a collection of our own. (Though I do know some ladies here have painted their own version that have turned out really lovely--just an idea.)

In our baskets this year:
new pillowcases, sewn by me
watercolors (little sets for my two oldest)
holy cards for their saints rings
little blank books to draw in (made by me)
new prayer cards for our morning devotions
a few homemade sweets

And for my husband's basket:
drawings from the kids
a set of St. Joseph prayer cards I'm making
new photos for him to pin up at work
cookies

I'm pretty sure I'm spending less than $10 total for everyone.

Ladies don't be discouraged about the peg doll saints. Yes that etsy shop has some lovely, detailed work. But I've never painted a thing in my life and I made some very simple saints that my kids adore... having simple faces makes it quite easy actually. And look at their hands, if they have any, just small blobs of paint! It's so easy!

I bought basic wood people from Casey's Wood Products where shipping is super fast and bulk discounts are offered. 25 pegs for $5. Add maybe $8 for shipping.

Throw in a couple tubes of cheap acrylics on sale say $7 or so and you can create 25 of these for $20... with paint to spare. Well you might want to invest in a cheap pack of paintbrushes... especially splurge $2 or $3 on a very fine one for detail work.

It's so easy. And so ridiculously rewarding and fun to make. My kids play with theirs all the time... they build houses out of blocks for them, they drive them around in cars, they play "peoples", they cart them all over the house and love them. PLUS, they know the stories of all these saints and have a visual, sensory reminder of them!

Do try to make them yourselves... you won't regret it. And your kids will remember them forever, especially if you paint their patrons. These are just SOME of the ones we've made. You can do it too!!!

Love your saints, Ellie!

A fun idea would be to paint one saint for each child, and then place 2-3 blank wooden figures in their baskets with a set of markers and let them make their own. My kids love to make their own!

Other things in our baskets this year will be:
socks
homemade pillow cases
religious books and other books (from the thrift store)
new Pjs for the summer
new sunglasses for the summer

The socks, pjs and glasses are all things I need to buy, anyway
but somehow it is very exciting to find it all in the basket.

Oh Ellie, those are lovely! I may have to try to make some myself. Very inspiring! I wonder if AC Moore or Michaels might carry the wooden pegs.

Melinda, I love the idea of new pjs. We always give each child one present to open on Christmas Eve and it is always winter jammies. New pjs for Easter sounds like a lovely idea, too!

Other Easter Basket ideas: playsilks, marbles or other small balls, sidewalk chalk

I have also done bubble stuff in the baskets and other fun items from the Dollar Tree.

The Catholic Company has this set of Jesus and the Apostles
fo $24.99. It comes with 14 figures and a boat.

I think that would be a nice alternative to buying the painted saints. Each child could receive 2-3 apostles in his/her basket. Alternatively, you could tag each apostle with a child's name and hide them around the house. First, find all the apostles, and then find Jesus on Easter morning!

The Catholic Company always runs specials, too, if you sign up for their e-mail.

It's fun to include things like bubbles or kites which can be used for an Ascension hike or picnic at the end of the Easter season.

Many wonderful ideas have been offered through the years, in case anyone wants to peruse the older threads.

Ellie - those saint peg dolls are adorable! You did such a nice job. Thanks for the encouragement that they really are "quite easy."

The last time I looked they didn't. However, I do believe that joann's had a few of the different size pegs that are often used for the painted families. Or look at etsy and compare prices vs other online palaces.

All three of those stores have wooden peg people here- but not all the same kind. I guess it varies from store to store.

I think you are right! However, I looked last year, so maybe people have requested these since and placed them in more stores??

I made some knights for my ds's christmas present last year. They are super cute and very easy to do.

I've seen the pegs at craft stores before but Casey's prices (even after shipping) blow theirs out of the water. Also, I'm a fan of the plain shapes, not the bell sort of shaped ones you sometimes see (though he carries those too, if those are your taste).

I love the idea of including blank ones in the basket with some materials to paint/color or decorate.

My kids have made their own and while they were annoyed at first that they couldn't get them to look like mine, they were happy to have their own merry band of apostles. Plus they painted "themselves"... so now my kids (in wooden form) hang out with the saints.

Your saints are so lovely! Are these the smaller size?

I was ready to do the smaller peg size people (they look like the old Fisher Price Little People), but they are considered a possible choking hazard, so I'm switching to the larger about 3" size.

This thread, painted saints has all sorts of ideas and resources on painting your own.

I agree, while I like to support home businesses, the prices are outrageous...and for that cost, would I want them to play around with them?

I didn't go through this whole thread, but I like to give little seeds to plant in the garden in our baskets.

Very cute, Ellie!

Yes, Jenn, I think that is a lot for a toy that in our home would get beat up pretty quick. I bought one for dh's goddaughter's first communion, and I think they make nice statues for a special occasion to go on a shelf in a child's room so that they won't break should they get knocked over, but the work is so detailed and pretty (and probably worth at least the $20 just in the time they take), I'd be sad to see them tossed in a toy bin, scratched and chipped

Like Melinda, I like to include things I plan on buying anyway that can come out of other budgets like clothing or education!

This year, I'm thinking the boys would like to learn to play chess now that my second is almost 5 and old enough to learn (so there are two of them ), so I'm going to get the Usborne Chess book.

We also don't own a pair of binoculars, so I think we will get a couple of pairs of those. We have a lot of mature trees in our yard, and we've wished for them more than a few times now as we strain to identify the birds coming north for Spring.

I think I'll see, too, if dh will build one of those leaf/flower presses. They are pretty simple, and we hope to collect and identify the leaves from our yard this summer.

...even after reading Free Range Kids?

I like the 2 inch size and think they would be fine.
