Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know where I can find a Tenebrae Hearse or plans for build one? This will be our first year trying to add a Tenebrae service to our family traditions. Any pointers on this service would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

This is something I have never heard of. Can you tell us what it is?

Peace,
Nancy

I had not heard of that term either, but assumed it must be the candle holder used in the service. Looking around I found that was the case - Tenebrea Hearse (Catholic Encyclopedia).

For our home tenebrae we just use the votive candle set (often pictured here and started by Ruth), placed in a long line on the table. Then we extinguish those as we go through the stations. We have never done a real home tenebrea with the Office readings - as there is one here local every year at the seminary and we attend that one.

I have thought about making the triangular holder. Several years ago at a display of Mexican santos I saw a beautiful wooden one done in the style of the santos. Then shortly after that at a garage sale found a triangular candle holder which was supposed to be a christmas tree - but to me looked perfect for the one for tenebrae if it could be adapted. It only has spaces for 7 candles so would need to be doubled and I haven't worked on it enough to figure out how to do it. Now you've got me thinking again.

Here is a picture:

It's more decorative - I've seen even more elaborate ones. I've also seen ones that were really plain - just the straight triangle with the candle bases attached or drilled in (for a wooden one).

My husband posted an at home version of the service on his companies file sharing site. You can use the link to take a look.   We got booklet from friends at church last year and have been looking forward to trying it.
I just haven't been successful in finding a hearse. We'll probably end up having to fabricate something.

ETA: The Tenebrae service I am referring to is Martins and Lauds from the Divine Office of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.
