Is it Coats and Clark, Mettler, Gutterman, Sulky?

When I take my machine in to be cleaned, I always get the lecture on not using cheap thread. I use mainly Gutterman and Mettler. There doesn't seem to be "cheap" thread available anymore, unless you buy the 99 cent spools from the bargain bins.

I am interested to hear what type of thread you like and why, and where you like to buy thread. I try to keep a watch at fabrics.com for sales...

I am doing a sewing project during Lent that is going to use a lot of thread, so I need to stock up!

Gutterman, but I have to stock up when it's on sale:). My mom was a coats and Clark user, and she never said anything to me about 'cheap' thread so I used that for a long time but find that in my newer machine, it breaks a lot.

I was thinking you meant board post thread when I opened this...

Coats and Clark used to be made in the US and was a good thread. It is no longer made here. If you were to look at it under a microscope you wouild be able to see that is has thick and thin spots. It is the variation of thickness that messes up machines.
I don't think there are inexpensive threads anymore, but the difference is in the quality.
(learned all this when I worked for at a Viking dealer). HTH

I use the same threads, but I also have a supply of others that I use on occasion. My mother had learned about the different quality of threads and printed out little booklets on care of our sewing machines for all her 5 daughters. (Of course, I've mislaid mine right now.) Her main stressor was the thread. She talked about the cotton wrapped thread as also a big problem, as it sheds into the machine.

The other day I was sewing and she came to help a bit, and she stopped and asked why I was using the bad thread. It's what I had! But newer projects, when I'm matching thread, I buy the other kind.

I frequently get it at joann's since they always have 40% off coupons. I also take my mom's cast off's- she quilts professionally and does very little garment work anymore. So when she gets a bug to clean out her sewing studio I often get blessed with fabric and thread. :)

I bought some Sulky yesterday during the Joann's sale, but it was very "wispy"- lots of little threads coming off it, which I never remember seeing before. I wound up taking it back. The saleslady said it is made from rayon, which is why it looks frayed and is so expensive. I bought Gutterman instead, but I still need to stock up when there is a sale.

Between having to buy the right thread and changing the needle all the time (which apparently should be every 10 minutes ) it's getting a little tricky to sew.
