Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have a copy of the Marian Children's Missal and love it. I'm now looking for a second missal (for another child) and am wondering whether I should buy another copy of that one or try Jesus, Make Me Worthy. Can anyone compare them for me? From the description, it sounds like the latter has many more prayers included. How are the illustrations of the Mass in that one?

Thank you!

I don't know Celeste but I have a friend I can ask. We currently have the St. Joseph's Childrens Missal but I'd like to have a look at these to see how they compare as I need to get some more children's missals too.

I actually just ordered a copy of Lord, Make Me Worthy this afternoon (Angelus Press is having a free shipping deal right now), so I'm looking forward to seeing the differences. This one is $2 more and has more pages, so there is obviously more content. I'm most interested in the layout of the follow-along-with-the-Mass section.

Please do come back and update what you think after you receive it, Celeste! We have copies of the Marian Children's Missal, but not of Jesus, Make Me Worthy so I'd love to hear your thoughts and comparison!!

I'd love to know what you think as well Celeste! I had a really great Latin/English missal in my adolescence, but I lost it. I wish I knew what it was called so I could recommend it and buy it for my kids if it is still out there.

We also have the Marian Children's Missal. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the other.

I saw Jesus, Make Me Worthy at a friends and it's just beautiful, I think it's the one for us. The pictures in my opinion are special, the sort you'd always remember. My friend said she felt it was a bit small and fiddly though and would be nicer a touch bigger.

I'd love to know how you compare the two as well Celeste.

We got it in the mail last week and I agree with Sharyn--it is really lovely! I already have it on my to-do list to do a full review of it here this weekend, so I'll be back soon with further thoughts.

Okay, I'm back to compare MCM (Marian Children's Missal) and Lord, Make Me Worthy (LMMW)...

They are both the same dimensions (about 4.5" x 5"), but LMMW is thicker (156 pages vs. 287 pages). Both have very nice, smooth pages with rounded edges, thicker than a normal missal. They seem quite sturdy, and the covers are wipe-able imitation-leather paperbacks. I think the size is good for small hands, though I'd like to see them open a bit easier--the way they are bound means they don't stay open easily, which is something I'm used to with my own hardcover missals. But I suppose durability would be compromised. There is also no ribbon bookmark to save a child's place during the Mass.

Contents of the MCM:
:: Prayer Before Mass
:: Missal section - photo of priest on one side of the page, words in English (translation from the Latin) on the other
:: My Gospel Stories for Sunday and Holy Days - the Gospel readings in English, with lovely colored pictures throughout
:: Prayer section - Examination of Conscience and prayers for before and after Confession and Holy Communion
:: Holy Mass in Latin and English - side-by-side text
:: Prayer Before a Crucifix

Contents of LMMW:
:: Chapters 1-8 - Introductory chapters on a variety of topics: The Meaning of Life, Morning Prayers, Evening Prayers, the Meaning of Mass (each chapter is a few pages long)
:: Chapter 9 (Missal section) - This is less literal than the MCM missal portion. The text given are prayers for the child to say during parts of the Mass rather than the English text itself. Each part of the Mass is described with a couple lines, and then the prayer is given. Lovely prayers. The illustrations are really beautiful, and I much prefer them to the photos in the MCM.
:: Chapters 10-37 are on a variety of topics and contain lots of prayers and devotions: The Way of the Cross, The Mysteries of the Rosary, The Manner of Serving at Mass, The Catholic Child and St. Joseph, The Catholic Child and His Parents, The Ten Commandments, etc. There are color illustrations throughout--again, really lovely. The Way of the Cross section is particularly nice.

So JMMW is more a prayer book than the MCM, which is properly a missal. The MCM has the English and Latin texts for the Mass which I really like, and which is the only reason I don't prefer JMMW unreservedly. I also do like the inclusion of the Gospel texts, though we usually read those at home anyway before Mass and our priest also reads them in English before the homily, so that's not as much a problem. The added prayers and devotions are definitely worth the extra $2 that JMMW costs. I just wish JMMW had both the lovely prayers they've written for the Mass section AND the actual translations so that it would be a true missal and prayer book combo.

Hope that helps some of you! I'm happy to answer any questions if you have them.

We have a St. Joseph one - I'm ok but not excited with the illustrations, but again (like the post above) the book does not stay open well. It does have a bookmark though which is nice.

It would be nice to have one that has beautiful illustrations, stays open and has a bookmark!

We have both the Marian Children's Missal and a couple of copies of Jesus, Make Me Worthy. In addition to what Celeste has shared, I wanted to add that the Marian Children's Missal is basically intended to be used at Mass like a missal (my children don't use it as such). Jesus, Make Me Worthy is a traditional First Communion Missal. We gave them to two of our children as First Communion gifts. It has a special page in the front of the book to record the child's First Communion information.

One of my daughters likes to read the Stations of the Cross in JMMW.

Thanks for the comparison Celeste!

Just for the record, my friends copy of JMMW is a full inch smaller than the current publishing. I'm so glad it's now a little bigger.
