I am looking for a good, engaging picture book about the life of Muhammad and the beginnings of Islam to coincide with dd's (age 9) history studies.
I'm clueless.
Anyone have suggestions???

I was about to recommend the same one and say the same thing. Don't know of any others.

Sadly, I have not seen anything...perhaps this ties into the Islamic prohibition of images of the Prophet. It's hard to create a picture book focusing on Islam without pictures of the most important person in Islam's history.

Excellent point.
I see that Demi gets around this by portraying him only as a golden silhouette. Very clever.
Because of the difficulty finding historical picture books, we have been enjoying a bit of a rabbit trail looking at Islamic art, which due to this prohibition (including not portraying any humans or animals for the most part) has developed some distinctive styles of art including geometric, arabesque, floral, and calligraphic.
I see an art project in our future!LOL!

If you are studying the Muslim faith, I highly recommend doing something on Saladin. He is a great hero of Islam and a wonderful role model. I wish that we would have acted as well during the Crusades!!!
Saladin Noble Prince of Islam

Just to post something contrary....
I have learning about Islam for the past few years. The more I learn, the more appalled I am -- and the more grateful I am to be Catholic. Please be careful what you present as many things about Islam and Mohammad are whitewashed in books and texts in the West. The Pact of Umar, the institution of the dhimma, and the aggression of Islam are often omitted or minimized. Mohammad's personal conduct was disgusting -- so bad that I would not cover all of it with children. Worse yet, the example of the "Prophet" is normative for Muslims for all time which is why child marriage is acceptable among orthodox Muslims along with slavery, wife beating, etc.
Oh, and the "Isa" (Jesus) of the Koran is supposed to destroy Christianity at the end of the world...
Please thoroughly educate yourself before bringing up Mohammad and Islam. Robert Spencer's books are easy to find and quite readable.
In Christ,

Yes, I realize there are a LOT of problems with Islam. I am not going into the religion itself with dd at this time except to explain the basics of where it came from, who Muhammad was, etc.
My approach for my dd will be purely an historical one at this time, so she understands what the crusades were about, etc. as we approach the middle ages in her history studies. Gotta have the context, you know?
Once dd is older and I do decide it is time to begin discussions of the religion of Islam, I will treat it the same way as I do any other religion contrary to Catholicism. That is, with respect, but great, great caution.

Theresa, that's the approach we've taken, as well. My dd (13) was interested in finding out about other religions (particularly since she has a couple of LDS friends), but it was easy for her to see that the beliefs held by Muslims, Hindus, etc. are completely different from ours.
I did pre-read all the books we used and found they were pretty balanced in their approaches, but she's past the picture book stage, so there were several titles to choose from.

I was not sure where to post this, but thought this might be an okay place. For anyone looking for a Catholic perspective on the Crusades, Lighthouse Catholic Media has an excellent CD entitled "Understanding the Crusades" by Dr. Madden.
Prior to listening to this, I had only the current-day view on the Crusades and he does an excellent job breaking this all down and even tying it into today's struggles with Islam.

Another Lighthouse Catholic Media CD that I would recommend, though it's been a while since we listened to it, so I don't know how appropriate for a 9-year-old. Off the top of my head I can't remember any potential problems though.
Abba or Allah by Scott Hahn
20 minute YouTube version here
ETA: it's not a picture book, but maybe good additional material
