Hi all Journey North participants. The sunrise sunset data for this week is available.
Mystery Class #3 has a photoperiod of 20 hours and 8 minutes.
So surprisingly it isn't at the South Pole but somewhere else in the Antarctic region around the edges of the Antarctic Circle. I'm excited as that makes it a little more interesting to follow.
Feb. 7 calculations as reported:
Mystery Class #1: 13 hours 27 minutes
Mystery Class #2: 11 hours 35 minutes
Mystery Class #3: 20 hours 8 minutes
Mystery Class #4: 11 hours 16 minutes
Mystery Class #5: 13 hours 9 minutes
Mystery Class #6: 10 hours 50 minutes
Mystery Class #7: 13 hours 35 minutes
Mystery Class #8: 10 hours 12 minutes
Mystery Class #9: 12 hours 17 minutes
Mystery Class #10: 10 hours 35 minutes

I wanted to say that since Jen had recommended the book On the Line as a resource I checked out other titles by Graham Dolan. I have found them to be very clearly written and address the very specific topics that are helpful to understand when doing this study. Highly recommended.
Greenwich Guide to Night and Day
Greenwich Guide to the Seasons
Greenwich Guide to Measuring Time

Ladies, we still need calculations for this week from #1, #7, #9, #10. If you could post those asap so that others can include those on their graph that would be very helpful. Thanks.
And I wanted to add another great resource for this study if you happen to be fortunate enough to have a S.O.S. located near you. S.O.S stands for Science on a Sphere. It is a recent technology created by NOAA to show a wide variety of data sets related to the earth. It is projected onto room sized sphere and illuminated for display. It is very cool. They have a couple data sets that show topics related to those addressed in Journey North - sunrise/sunset, change in daylight with seasonal change, migration patterns due to seasonal change, and more.
We have visted two in the last couple of weeks (there are 6 in our state). I found it to reinforce things we have learned and terms we have seen defined. Like when they showed us the terminator line - after reading about it here in the nice summary Caroline did of sunrise/sunset/twilight.
So check out the http://sos.noaa.gov/news/sos_sites.htmllocations where these spheres have been installed. It is a great field trip during JN time.

Mary, we have one site here in MA (where everything is local comapred to some states, lol.) Looking at their website they have a long list of different presentations for the SOS. Which ones did you see?
Thanks!
