Does your state require a religious exemption?
I categorize my own choice as "philosophical," though, I do know of Catholics who use the Catholic teaching on family and parental authority in order to use a religious exemption.

In our state we have "Personal belief exemption" which I am thankful for - because whether there is religious justification for a Catholic to be exempt from vaccinations in general is debatable. It is complicated and there isn't clear guidance/opinion on that aspect.
A resource you might want to consult for information and their perspective is
Children of God for Life
And let's stick to the particular question asked here - not a debate between whether or not to vaccinate. Different families feel differently about this often controversial topic.

This can also be a tricky question.. some states that have a religious exemption, have it worded in such a way that it is really more of a philosophical exemption. And that wording can really make a difference in whether it's applicable or not.
Here's a site I've found that have links to all the laws for all the states.

We are moving to a state with EITHER a religious OR medical. Currently we use a philosophical exemption.

We live in a state with only religious exemption (at least that was how it was ten yrs ago) On ours you have to fill out basic information (name, birthday, etc- nothing about beliefs) and have the doctors sign and notorize. Doctor keeps one copy, another goes to their school (if enrolled) and you keep another. They are not allowed to ask why your religious beliefs exempt you from the vaccinations, but my oldest had a reaction to his shots at 2 months old, so I our doc is fine with it

We are going to SC and they say you have to pick up the form in person and then do the signing and do the notarizing.

When I discussed this issue with my Dr. in the past he said that you should not use the medical exemption. His view was that if it ever became an issue you could be taken to court and "experts" would then determine if it was necessary for medical reasons not to vaccinate.

I think that you should probably talk to people in your state. "Religion" is a pretty fluid thing these days, and I could probably have a lot of what I consider "philosophical" beliefs and convictions categorized as religious (I certainly hope my philosophical convictions are grounded in my faith) even though they aren't church dogma. The question is whether a court would ascribe those to my "religion" or if they would see that I am Roman Catholic and try to bring in experts in order to hold me strictly to what said experts have to say about official Church teaching.
What Betsy says makes a lot of sense, though. I think it is more likely a court would challenge you on a medical exemption.

Yeah, we have no basis for a medical exemption anyway, dd has never had any problems. The SC laws from what I can find just state that it needs to be a valid, recognized religion in order to qualify. That's my initial research though
